Haleakalā National Park
Haleakalā National Park is one of Maui's highest-impact planning choices: you are choosing between a cold pre-dawn summit reservation, an easier sunset visit, a daytime crater-and-Upcountry drive, or the remote Kipahulu district beyond Hāna. The summit reaches 10,023 feet, weather can change quickly, and the two main park districts do not connect by road inside the park, so the best visit depends on timing as much as scenery.

First-Visit Plan
- Pick sunrise, sunset, or daytime first. Use our Haleakalā sunrise and sunset times guide if your main question is exact light timing.
- If self-driving sunrise, reserve the vehicle entry. Recreation.gov releases sunrise reservations 60 days and 2 days ahead at 7:00 a.m. HST. Bring the confirmation and matching photo ID.
- If self-driving sunset, treat parking as the constraint. Plan to arrive as much as 3 hours before sunset to improve your chance of parking; NPS says to arrive at least 3 hours early during the busy winter season. Cars can be temporarily turned around when parking reaches capacity, and an entrance pass does not guarantee entry.
- Check alerts, weather, and fuel before you climb. Summit weather can be cold, windy, wet, or cloudy even when resort areas are clear. There is no gas in the park.
- Match the day to the district. Summit and Upcountry pair naturally; Kipahulu pairs with the Road to Hāna and Pipiwai Trail.
- Use the drive back as part of the plan. After sunrise, consider Upcountry stops around Kula and Makawao. After sunset, expect a dark, winding descent.
Summit vs. Kipahulu
Most visitors are choosing between two separate Haleakalā days. The Summit District is the high-elevation crater, overlook, sunrise, sunset, and Upcountry drive plan. The Kipahulu District is the far East Maui plan near Hāna, usually paired with the Road to Hāna and Pipiwai Trail.
They are both part of the same national park, but they do not connect by road inside the park. Treating Kipahulu as a quick add-on to a Summit District morning is the mistake that makes this page worth reading before you commit.
Park Entrance Fee
The entrance fee is $30 per private vehicle, $25 per motorcycle, or $15 per person entering on foot or bicycle; NPS lists each as valid for 3 days. The park is cashless for in-person entrance payment, so plan on credit/debit payment, a valid pass, or purchasing in advance through Recreation.gov. Hawaiʻi Tri-Park and America the Beautiful passes are accepted with appropriate photo ID.
Reservations Required for Haleakala Sunrise
A sunrise reservation is required year-round for each vehicle entering the Summit District from 3:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. Recreation.gov lists the non-refundable reservation fee at $1.00 per vehicle, with reservations released 60 days and 2 days in advance at 7:00 a.m. HST. Visitors without a reservation may enter after 7:00 a.m.
Please Note: Tickets are per vehicle, not per person. Tickets are limited to one per customer every three days. Bring your reservation confirmation email and a photo ID matching the reservation holder’s name.

Haleakalā means "House of the Sun," and the summit remains a deeply significant Native Hawaiian cultural landscape. Treat the park as more than a viewpoint: stay on marked trails, do not disturb rocks, plants, structures, or cultural sites, and give rare species room to survive in a harsh high-elevation environment.
The park also protects landscapes that feel completely different from one another, from the exposed summit and cinder terrain to the wet Kipahulu coast. Rare plants such as the Hawaiʻi silversword are part of why slower, lower-impact travel matters here.
Kipahulu Area Stops
Kipahulu is the Haleakalā experience most visitors reach from the Road to Hāna, not from the summit road. Plan around trail conditions, rain, flash-flood risk, and the long return drive. Do not assume pools are open for swimming; check current NPS alerts before you go.
