Yes, if you are honest about the trade. The weather is warm, the ocean is usable, and Hawaii's holiday events feel nothing like a mainland winter. The cost is the catch. Christmas week through New Year's runs hot for both flights and lodging, and inventory tightens fast once the rest of December fills around it.

I would choose Christmas in Hawaii for a family milestone, a once-a-decade holiday trip, or a traveler who wants beaches more than a white Christmas. I would not choose it for a bargain trip. Book the big pieces in this order: flights, lodging, rental car, then Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year's Eve meals. Do not leave the car for last. Neighbor-island holiday weeks are hard on car inventory, and a cheap base rate can disappear while you are still debating the hotel.

December is cooler and wetter than summer, but it is still beach weather by mainland standards. Think warm afternoons, cooler evenings, short showers, and bigger surf on north-facing shores. The island and the side of the island matter more than the word "December." Leeward resort zones are usually drier than windward coasts.

Christmas Day is where visitors get tripped up. Hawaii does not shut down completely, but some high-demand attractions close, and many restaurants run holiday-only menus with reservations.

• Pearl Harbor National Memorial is closed on December 25. The National Park Service lists the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center as closed on Thanksgiving Day, December 25, and January 1. If Pearl Harbor is part of the trip, schedule it before or after Christmas Day and reserve the USS Arizona Memorial program early through the official NPS/recreation.gov path. • Diamond Head closes Christmas and New Year's. The State of Hawaii page for Diamond Head State Monument lists normal daily hours but says the park is closed Christmas and New Year's Day. • Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is different. NPS lists Hawaii Volcanoes National Park as open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, year-round, including all holidays. • Restaurants vary by property. Resort restaurants, hotel buffets, and some independent places open with Christmas menus. Small local restaurants may close so staff can be with family. Make the reservation before you fly, then reconfirm the week of travel.

My default Christmas Day plan is simple: beach or resort morning, one reserved meal, and no complicated cross-island driving. Save the ticketed attractions for December 23, 24, 26, or 27.

Oahu has the anchor event. Honolulu City Lights opening night is scheduled for December 5, 2026, at Honolulu Hale. The official FAQ says the opening ceremony begins at 5:30 p.m., the city tree lights turn on at 6 p.m., and the Public Workers' Electric Light Parade steps off at 6 p.m. from King Street. The display continues through December on the Frank F. Fasi Civic Center grounds, with outdoor lights lit nightly and staying on through the night. Waikiki adds the resort layer. Tree lightings, lobby music, Santa photos, and holiday shopping events concentrate around Waikiki hotels, Royal Hawaiian Center, International Market Place, Ala Moana Center, and Ward/Kakaʻako. Most of these calendars post later than the citywide events. If you are staying in Waikiki, ask your hotel what is open to non-guests and what is guest-only.

The Kauai Festival of Lights is worth watching, but verify the current year. The official site identifies the event as Kauai's annual winter Christmas festival and lists its contact details and current venue information. As of this June 2026 build, I could verify the official site and prior-season information, but I could not verify final 2026 dates in text. Outside that anchor, Kauai's holiday calendar leans on resort events in Poipu and Princeville plus small community parades and craft fairs in Kapaa, Hanapepe, and Lihue. Confirm any specific event on the host's own page before driving across the island for it.

Maui is more fluid than Oahu for holiday planning. The Lahaina calendar that visitors used to lean on for tree lightings and town events has shifted in recent years, and I would not assume any specific Lahaina holiday tradition is running on its old schedule without checking the host's current page. Use resort calendars in Wailea, Kāʻanapali, Kapalua, and Upcountry instead, and verify each event on the operator's own site before driving. The Upcountry towns of Makawao, Pāʻia, and Kula run small craft and tree-lighting events most years, but dates and locations shift, so check before you commit a day to one.

Two calendars I would watch specifically as the season fills in: the Maui Arts & Cultural Center (MACC) program page in Kahului for ticketed December concerts, and the Shops at Wailea events page for the South Maui tree-lighting that has historically anchored Wailea's holiday week. Neither has posted final December 2026 dates yet, so treat both as watch-list, not anchor.

Big Island holiday events are spread out. Hilo, Kona, Waimea, and the Kohala resorts tend to run smaller parades, craft fairs, concerts, and hotel events. The trade-off is driving distance. Pick the event closest to where you are staying instead of crossing the island at night for something unverified.

The two community anchors most visitors ask about are the Waimea Twilight Christmas Parade in Waimea town and the Kailua-Kona community lighting and parade on Aliʻi Drive. Both have run in recent years but had not posted confirmed 2026 dates at the time of this guide. Fold New Year's Eve into the Christmas trip. Do not build a separate island-hop just for December 31 unless the whole trip is already Oahu-based.

Waikiki is the most practical public-watch zone. The Waikiki Improvement Association is the source I would watch for the public offshore fireworks show; its current events page still lists the last confirmed Waikiki New Year's fireworks details, including a midnight barge show visible along the Waikiki shoreline. The December 31, 2026 show that would welcome 2027 was not posted in final form when this guide was built, so treat Waikiki as the likely planning base and verify the live listing before you promise the view to your group. For the actual night, reserve dinner early and keep the geography tight. If you are staying in Waikiki, walk. If you are staying outside Waikiki, either book dinner near your hotel or plan the ride home before midnight. Residential illegal fireworks are a safety problem in Hawaii; visitors should stick to official public shows and hotel-sponsored events.

The 2026 JAL Honolulu Marathon is scheduled for December 13, 2026. The same official site lists the Kalakaua Merrie Mile on December 12 and the Start to Park 10K on December 13. That puts the race before Christmas week, but it still matters for early-December Oahu hotel demand, road closures, and Waikiki morning plans.

If you are not running, avoid planning a Sunday-morning drive through the race corridor. If you are running, book Waikiki or Ala Moana lodging early and assume restaurant reservations around the expo and finish weekend will tighten.

A luau can be the cleanest Christmas-week dinner plan because the meal, show, timing, and transportation questions are bundled into one reservation. The risk is inventory. Operators may run normal schedules, add holiday nights, or close on specific dates. Do not assume Christmas Eve or Christmas Day availability until the operator's booking calendar shows it.

Choose the island and lodging first, then reserve the meal near where you sleep. A great dinner that requires a one-hour night drive after wine is not a great dinner.
