The Friends of Honolulu City Lights FAQ gives a different tree-lighting sequence: a 5:30 p.m. ceremony and approximately 6 p.m. switch-on, before the first parade unit reaches Honolulu Hale around 6:30 p.m. Its parade route runs along King Street from River Street to Kawaiahaʻo Street. Both sources name December 5, 2026; the precise tree-lighting time needs reconfirmation. If that moment matters to your family, arrive for the earlier program and check the organizer again before leaving, rather than timing your arrival to a promised switch-on.

The parade turns city work vehicles into holiday displays. The organizer's history describes decorated refuse trucks, a cherry picker, ambulances and fire trucks. Kids lose their minds over it. Adults do too, quietly.

The 2026 opening-night program also lists free Santa photos at the Mission Memorial Auditorium and food vendors along Punchbowl Street. Build in extra time for the opening-night crowds and parade-related street closures around the civic center.

The City's October 19 announcement adds a lighted tunnel, illuminated trees and a train for keiki rides on the Fasi Grounds, plus festive displays along Alapaʻi and Beretania streets. It describes these as free displays and names the 2026 theme as “Christmas in the Country.”

That announcement does not give a train timetable, boarding rules or separate tunnel hours. Choose the event for the overall display outing; confirm those details before making a train ride the reason for the trip. The City-linked event site is another place to check the developing program.

After opening night, the organizer FAQ lists the Frank F. Fasi Civic Center Grounds as open daily from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. through December. Those general hours do not establish when the new attractions operate. For a lights visit, plan an evening and check the specific activity schedule.

The City's 2026 announcement includes the traditional Shaka Santa and Tūtū Mele displays. Shaka Santa stands 21 feet tall at the outdoor fountain. He has thrown his shaka here since 1989, and Tūtū Mele arrived later, according to the event's own history.

Inside Honolulu Hale, the decorated-tree exhibit is in the courtyard. For the separate wreath exhibit, the City's November 2 announcement confirms that the 2026 Holiday Wreath Contest entries will be on display in Honolulu Hale's Lane Gallery from December 5 through December 30, 2026. That gives a later-December visit another indoor stop to consider.

The event's wreath page still carries conflicting start dates and opening hours. Use the dated City announcement for the display's December 5–30 run, then reconfirm Lane Gallery hours before making the wreaths the reason for your trip downtown. The outdoor grounds hours do not establish the indoor gallery schedule. The event is free to the public; bring a camera for the displays.

Pick the night based on the kind of evening you want.

Go opening night (December 5) for the full event: parade, tree lighting, Santa photos, food vendors, and crowd energy. The trade-off is dense crowds and street restrictions around the civic center.

Choose a later December evening if the displays matter more to you than the opening-night parade. Do not build that plan around a promise of empty grounds or easy parking. The current FAQ lists food vendors from 6–9 p.m. December 6–30, compared with 4–10 p.m. on opening night. Recheck that schedule before relying on it for dinner.
