Updated September 11, 2026: NOAA’s September ENSO Diagnostic Discussion keeps an El Niño Advisory in effect. The Climate Prediction Center says El Niño is strengthening and gives a greater than 90% chance of a very strong event during fall and winter 2026–27.

That is a seasonal climate signal, not a forecast for a particular beach, trail, flight, or travel date. It can raise the odds of familiar El Niño patterns across Hawaiʻi, but it cannot tell you whether your planned Tuesday will be sunny, windy, smoky, rainy, or safe for the ocean. Use the outlook to build margin; use current official conditions to choose the day.

NOAA measures El Niño across the tropical Pacific. A stronger event makes broad climate relationships more likely; it does not make every typical effect appear at the same time or on every island.

Hawaiʻi-specific NOAA guidance says El Niño often favors lower wet-season rainfall and a greater chance of drought, while Central Pacific tropical-cyclone activity can be higher than normal. Those are useful planning signals. They are not an all-clear for rain, a promise of beach weather, or a prediction that a storm will affect Hawaiʻi.

Keep the source boundary clear: the CPC discussion owns the current ENSO status, while the National Weather Service Honolulu forecast owns the weather that can affect an actual outing.

Do not choose an island from the El Niño label. Choose it for the experiences, driving, lodging, and pace your group wants, then leave room for conditions to change.

Give a weather-sensitive anchor a backup window. Keep one lower-commitment option near the lodging. Avoid putting a boat trip, exposed hike, and long drive into the same inflexible day. Ocean conditions: El Niño is not a snorkeling forecast. Swell direction, wind, currents, runoff, lifeguard guidance, and beach-specific warnings matter more on the day. Use the Ocean Report, then read posted signs and ask the lifeguard before entering.

Before paying, check the change and cancellation terms for the trip’s expensive anchors. Give weather-sensitive activities a second possible day. Save one indoor or lower-commitment backup near the lodging.

During the trip, read the current island forecast, surf information, park or trail status, and county alerts that apply to the exact place. Follow an official closure or evacuation instruction even when the seasonal outlook sounded favorable.

The September NOAA update is a reason to plan with margin, not a reason to expect one fixed version of Hawaiʻi. Let seasonal information shape the backup plan. Let current conditions choose the activity.
