Whale season gets the headlines every November. The mōlī deserve some of them. Hawaiʻi’s albatross nesting season begins in late October and November, around the same time the first humpbacks arrive offshore. Kaʻena Point on Oʻahu’s western tip and Kīlauea Point on Kauaʻi’s north shore are the two main public wildlife-viewing sites.

These big, gliding seabirds have a wingspan pushing six and a half feet, and they spend most of their lives over the open North Pacific. They come ashore to breed and raise a chick. From November into summer, that work plays out in plain view at both points. The refuge breeding calendar gives the season its shape.

If your trip lands between November 2026 and February 2027, this is one of the best free-to-cheap wildlife experiences in the islands. Here is how the season works and how to plan around it.

Adults begin returning in late October and November. November and December bring the famous courtship dancing, where groups of birds bow, clack bills, point skyward, and call in a routine that looks choreographed because it is learned behavior. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service describes these courtship rituals after the birds return.

Eggs are laid from late November into December, one per pair; most are laid by mid-December. Both parents share incubation for about 65 days, and chicks begin hatching in late January and early February. Adults then forage at sea while the chick remains at the nest. Fledging runs through June and July, after which the colony quiets down until the next breeding season.

Two planning takeaways come from that calendar. November and December are best for dancing and courtship. January onward brings nesting birds and, later, chicks. This is a season rather than a one-day event, so you do not need to build a trip around a single week as you might for a festival.

Kaʻena Point Natural Area Reserve sits at the wild western tip of Oʻahu, past where the pavement ends. There are two ways in, and the road does not connect between them, so pick a side. From the North Shore, drive Farrington Highway to its end past Mokulēʻia and walk the old dirt road along the coast. From the Waiʻanae side, start at Keawaʻula Beach (Yokohama Bay), where the highway also dead-ends. Either way it is roughly two and a half miles each way over exposed, shadeless coastline. Bring water, sun protection, and real footwear.

The payoff at the point is a fenced dune ecosystem where the albatross colony nests among native naupaka and ʻilima. The state completed the predator-proof fence in March 2011 to keep out dogs, cats, mongooses, and rats. In a record 2019 season, state biologists counted more than 100 nests inside the reserve. Stay on the marked paths and watch from a respectful distance.

Two rules matter here. Dogs are not allowed in the reserve, even leashed, because ground-nesting seabirds need a predator-free place to breed. The paths are the boundary: nests sit close to the trail in places, so give sitting birds room and let the moment come to you. Check current trail and access status before you commit to the drive.

Kauaʻi’s version is the opposite experience: a five-minute paved walk instead of a five-mile round-trip hike, with a working 1913 lighthouse thrown in. Kīlauea Point National Wildlife Refuge occupies a bluff 180 feet above the ocean on Kauaʻi’s north shore, and in winter the albatross nest on the surrounding slopes and glide past at eye level. Red-footed boobies pack the hillsides year-round, nēnē graze the lawns, and from the same rail you can scan for humpbacks. The logistics are the part to get ahead of. The refuge is open Wednesday through Saturday only, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with entry closing at 3:30 p.m. Every visitor 16 and older needs an advance timed-entry reservation through Recreation.gov, at $10 admission plus a $1 booking fee. Children 15 and under are free; check the current reservation requirements before booking. America the Beautiful interagency pass holders pay only the booking fee.

Tickets open two months ahead on a rolling daily window. For a late-December visit, book in late October; for a January trip, the window opens in November. If your Kauaʻi days are Sunday through Tuesday, the refuge will be closed. You can still see the lighthouse and soaring seabirds from the free overlook just outside the gate, but the point itself stays off-limits.

Princeville is the residential-area exception. Albatross also nest on mowed greenbelts and lawn edges a few miles west of the refuge. Hawaiʻi Magazine has covered these neighborhood colonies. If you stay on the north shore in winter, you may pass a nesting bird on an ordinary morning walk.

Treat it like the gift it is. Watch from the sidewalk or road, keep well back, never approach or circle a bird for a photo, and remember these are wild seabirds on private and residential land, not a photo attraction. A few things improve either visit. Binoculars top the list; a compact pair turns a distant white speck into a bird with a face, and at Kīlauea Point they also earn their keep on whales. I prefer an early start, especially at Kaʻena, where there is zero shade and the winter sun still bites by mid-morning. Early light also makes photos easier.

For expert eyes, choose a birdwatching tour rather than a generic island loop. One more reason to care about these birds: they are older than they look. A Laysan albatross named Wisdom was banded on Midway Atoll in 1956 and was at least 72 when she returned in 2023. She is the world’s oldest known wild bird. A mōlī gliding past the rail may carry decades of North Pacific crossings in those wings. Standing there while it happens is worth a morning of any Hawaiʻi winter trip.
