Nēnē nesting season is an October-through-March travel issue before it is a wildlife-photo opportunity. The birds nest on the ground, walk along park roads, and may appear beside your rental car with little warning. That makes a slower drive through Haleakalā or Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park part of responsible trip planning.

A real park warning puts the risk in numbers. On July 12, 2026, a nēnē and an ʻuaʻu (Hawaiian petrel) were struck and killed by vehicles inside Haleakalā National Park. The park's July 16, 2026 safety release says motorists had killed 11 nēnē and 13 ʻuaʻu there in the previous four years.

If a fall trip includes Haleakalā, Kīlauea, or Kīlauea Point on Kauaʻi, use this guide to decide where a nēnē stop fits. Then follow the rules on the ground that day. Wildlife can change parking, trail access, and the safe place to stand.

Hawaiʻi DLNR says nēnē can nest during much of the year, but the majority of nesting happens from October through March. Its current nēnē species guidance describes nests as shallow ground scrapes, usually hidden under vegetation. Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park says most clutches are laid from October through December, while Haleakalā National Park says pairs often return to the same nesting site year after year.

The visitor consequence is simple: do not assume a bird beside a parking lot is merely passing through. A pair may be feeding near a nest that you cannot see. Goslings can also blend into grass or dark lava beside a road. Give the birds room and let posted closures override the itinerary you built at home.

Nēnē are federally listed as threatened and remain listed as endangered by the State of Hawaiʻi. DLNR describes a recovery from as few as 30 wild birds in the 1950s to several thousand today. The rebound is real. So are vehicle strikes, predators, disease, feeding, and human disturbance.

At Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, cars are the leading cause of adult nēnē deaths in the park, according to the National Park Service. Feeding is tied directly to that danger: birds that learn to beg approach roads and moving vehicles.

Haleakalā's July 2026 fatalities make the same point on Maui. Drive at or below the posted limit, scan both shoulders, and expect a bird to walk rather than fly out of the way. If a nēnē enters the pavement, stop and wait. Do not honk, edge forward, or open the window with food.

Build time into the route. A rushed sunrise departure or a late sprint back down the mountain encourages exactly the driving the parks are asking visitors to avoid. The schedule is yours to change. The bird does not understand that you have a reservation.

Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. Nēnē use roadsides, lawns, parking areas, and protected habitat around the park. Let a sighting happen during a normal Kīlauea day rather than driving from lot to lot to chase one. Check the park's current alerts before departure because managers can temporarily close a parking area or trail segment around a nest or brood.

Haleakalā National Park. The park's current nēnē page places Maui populations on Haleakalā and in the West Maui Mountains. A summit-district visit can produce a sighting without adding a separate wildlife detour. The July road deaths are the reason to treat Crater Road as habitat, not merely the approach to an overlook.

Kīlauea Point National Wildlife Refuge. This is the most structured choice for a Kauaʻi birding stop, and the refuge's official page describes nēnē as a frequent sight. The refuge limits access to protect sensitive wildlife, and its visitor page says reservations are required for adults age 16 and older. Confirm the current entry schedule and reservation inventory before driving north.

Choose the site already aligned with your island and route. Flying to another island or crossing Maui solely for a possible goose sighting creates a brittle plan around wild animals. A normal park or refuge day with a nēnē bonus is the better shape.

Follow the posted rule at the site you are visiting and add space when a nest or gosling may be nearby. Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park urged visitors to keep at least 60 feet from a nēnē family near Kīlauea Overlook in its January 2026 closure notice. That notice is a useful model even when the overlook itself is open: back away, stay out of the protected area, and let the birds choose where they move.

Do not treat 60 feet as a target to measure toward. A telephoto lens or binoculars solve the photo problem without moving closer. If a bird walks toward you, move away. If it hisses, lowers its head, spreads its wings, or blocks your route, you are already too close.

Never feed nēnē. DLNR's Five Keeps guidance connects feeding with birds approaching cars and roads. It also tells residents and visitors to keep dogs leashed, keep cats indoors, lower speed near roadways, and keep their distance. Those are not abstract conservation rules. They address the ways nēnē are still injured and killed.

A nesting family can change a visit after you arrive. In January 2026, Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park temporarily closed the Kīlauea Overlook parking lot to protect two adults and two goslings. One parking lot can pause so a threatened species can raise young.

Do not step around a rope, move a cone, or use an unmarked shoulder as replacement parking. Check the park's official current-conditions or alerts page before you leave, ask a ranger for the closest legal alternative, and continue the day somewhere else. Both national parks cover far more than one overlook. Kīlauea Point is reservation-based, so a closed or sold-out entry window should send you to another planned Kauaʻi stop, not to the refuge driveway hoping staff will make an exception.

1. Put one nēnē habitat site into the island itinerary you already want.
2. Check the park or refuge conditions page the morning of the visit.
3. Leave enough drive time that a bird in the road does not feel like a delay.
4. Keep food packed away and dogs leashed where pets are allowed.
5. Use binoculars or a telephoto lens and follow the strictest posted distance.
6. Accept closures and wildlife movement without trying to work around them.

The best nēnē encounter is uneventful. You notice the bird, stop moving, give it room, and leave with the habitat exactly as you found it.
