Stay close to your subject; water absorbs light and color, so distance kills sharpness and saturation. Respect the reef while you do it: float, do not stand, and keep fins off coral.

Rainbows. Hawaiʻi’s frequent mix of passing showers and strong sun gives you more rainbow chances than most trips on the mainland. Rainbow photography rule: the sun must be behind you. Face the rain with the sun at your back and look for the arc. Use a wide-angle lens or 0.5x phone lens to capture the full bow.
