A 60% peak rain chance does not mean rain for 60% of your Hawaii vacation day. Before changing a morning outing, check the forecast for the place and hours you actually plan to visit. The daily percentage alone cannot tell you when rain is most likely.
Our Weather Forecast is a useful starting point. Here is how to read its rain number, then make the next planning check.
The National Weather Service defines its precipitation probability as the chance that a forecast point receives at least 0.01 inch of rain during the forecast period. It does not mean that percentage of the time will be wet.
Providers use different definitions. Open-Meteo, which supplies our seven-day cards, defines its hourly precipitation probability using more than 0.1 millimeter in an hour. Our cards use the highest hourly probability across the day, labeled “peak rain chance.” That maximum is not a calculation of the chance of rain at any time during the whole day.
The cards describe the selected airport area: Honolulu, Kahului, Kona or Līhuʻe. Check the location label before applying that number to another part of the island.

This is a made-up comparison, not a real Hawaii forecast. In each example, all 24 hourly probabilities are 10% except one hour at 60%.
Both produce a daily maximum of 60%. The peak rain percentage on the card is the same, even though the hourly patterns differ.
For a hypothetical viewpoint visit from 8 to 10 a.m., Day A puts the higher probability inside the outing. Day B puts it later. You need the hourly detail to distinguish those plans; the daily maximum has discarded that timing information.
Neither 10% nor 60% in this exercise tells you how long rain would last or how heavy it would be. Do not turn the number into hours of rain, or use it alone to decide whether an outdoor activity is safe.
Check official warnings and closures separately. A rain percentage does not establish road access or ocean conditions. Do not assume the opposite coast is dry or the drive is clear because one forecast number looks lower.
Write down your intended place and visit hours. Open NWS Honolulu and check the local forecast, hourly detail and warnings for that plan. Recheck before leaving, and follow official instructions if conditions change.
