Hawaii scenic flights mean “helicopter” to most visitors, and a helicopter tour is the default bucket-list flight — running roughly $350 to $500 per person before fuel surcharges on major operators like Blue Hawaiian and Maverick. That sticker price is increasingly the reason a lot of visitors skip the flight entirely. Helicopters are not your only option. Hawaii has a small but real ecosystem of scenic flights that use gliders, vintage open-cockpit biplanes, and small fixed-wing planes instead, and the right one of those can be cheaper, quieter, smoother, or just a different kind of memorable than the helicopter ride.

This is the short list of non-helicopter scenic flight options in Hawaii — who flies what, where they fly from, what you actually see, and when the helicopter is still the better choice. None of these replace a helicopter tour for every itinerary, but for visitors looking at the helicopter price tag and wincing, or anyone who simply wants something different in the air, the alternatives are worth knowing about before you book.

The shorthand: helicopters are the most flexible aircraft in the air, but the least efficient. They burn more fuel per passenger than fixed-wing alternatives, make more noise, and command the highest sticker price. Anything else — glider, biplane, fixed-wing — trades some flexibility (no hover, no doors-off, no tight valley access) for a meaningful cost or experience advantage.

A glider flight at Dillingham Airfield on Oahu’s North Shore through Honolulu Soaring currently runs about $195 for a 15-minute single-passenger scenic ride and around $295 for two ($147.50 each), with longer soaring rides priced higher — well under half a comparable helicopter tour. A Stearman or Waco biplane ride is more theatrical than economical — you are paying for the open cockpit, the goggles, and the vintage airframe — and lands in a similar range to a short helicopter flight. Fixed-wing plane tours on the Big Island and Kauai sit somewhere in the middle: more affordable than a helicopter, faster than a glider, and able to cover ground a glider simply cannot reach.

The big honest tradeoff is window seat geometry. Helicopters give every passenger a wide outward view by design. Small planes with wings have a wing in the picture from at least one window seat, gliders have a single canopy view ahead and to the sides, and biplanes have the actual wings of the plane in every frame — which is often the point, photographically, but worth knowing if you are picturing helicopter-style views.

The center of gravity for non-helicopter scenic flights in Hawaii is Dillingham Airfield in Mokulēʻia, on the western edge of Oʻahu’s North Shore — a long single-runway strip wedged between the Waiʻanae range and the ocean, roughly a 45-minute drive from Waikīkī. The setting alone is half the experience. The runway runs parallel to the coast, the Waiʻanae mountains rise straight up off the southern edge of the field, and the prevailing trade winds out of the northeast set up reliable ridge lift along the mountains that lets sailplanes stay airborne with the engine of the tow plane already on the ground.

Honolulu Soaring has operated glider rides out of Dillingham since 1970 and is the most established option. The aircraft they put visitors in are two-seat sailplanes — an instructor pilot in front, the visitor in back, no engine — towed up by a small powered plane to roughly 2,000 to 3,000 feet, then released to glide silently along the ridges over Mokulēʻia and Kaʻena Point. Their published rides range from a 15-minute scenic ride to a 20-minute soaring or aerobatic ride, with longer flights possible when conditions allow. Confirm current pricing and aircraft availability on their site before you book — they post current rates and seasonal schedules there.

The biplane piece is a different feeling entirely. Open-cockpit biplane rides — when offered out of Dillingham — put you in the front cockpit of a vintage Stearman or Waco trainer, leather helmet, goggles, wind in your face, with the pilot in the back cockpit running the aircraft. Most flights stay over the North Shore, banking past Waimea Bay, the Banzai Pipeline, Sunset Beach, and the green inland ridges. Biplane operators on Dillingham have come and gone — Fly Biplane Hawaii currently flies a Waco out of the field — so check current availability before you build a trip around it. The vintage-aircraft scene at Dillingham shifts more than the glider operation does.

The Big Island is the one place where a fixed-wing plane has a genuine geographic advantage over a helicopter for the headline view. Helicopters out of Hilo and Kona can hover at the rim of Kīlauea’s caldera, which is part of the appeal, but they are also constrained by federal volcano overflight rules and by their range relative to the island’s size. A fixed-wing plane covers more ground in the same hour, gets a slightly higher and wider angle of the caldera complex, and on a clear day can pull off both Kīlauea and Mauna Loa on the same flight.

The standard Big Island scenic-plane tour leaves from either Hilo International Airport on the windward side or Kona International on the leeward side, and the route depends on which airport you start from. A Hilo departure typically tracks south to the Kīlauea summit, traces a bit of the East Rift Zone, banks back over Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, and returns up the Hāmākua Coast past the waterfalls. A Kona departure trades the waterfall coast for the dry leeward lava fields and a longer transit each way to the volcano. Flight lengths vary widely by route — Big Island Air’s volcano-focused tour from Hilo runs about 45–50 minutes, while their full circle-island tour runs closer to two hours — so check the specific tour length before booking, not a general range.

The eruption status matters more than which aircraft you pick. When Kīlauea is in an active eruptive phase — which it has been on and off since late 2023 — the view from any aircraft is genuinely spectacular. When the volcano is quiet, you are looking at a caldera and a lava field, which is still impressive but a different proposition. Kauai’s Nā Pali Coast is the other natural fixed-wing destination. The Nā Pali cliffs run unreachable by road for 17 miles, and the helicopter, boat, and small-plane tour markets all exist mostly to solve that problem. Helicopters dominate the category, but small fixed-wing planes have a few specific advantages on Kauai: they typically cost less, they can climb high enough to put both the Nā Pali Coast and the interior of Waimea Canyon in the same trip, and they tend to be quieter inside the cabin than a helicopter once you are at cruise altitude.

Most Kauai fixed-wing scenic tours fly out of Līhuʻe Airport on the southeast side of the island and follow some version of a counterclockwise loop: south past Poʻipū, west along the Waimea coast, up over Waimea Canyon (the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific”), out to the western edge of the Nā Pali cliffs, then back over the north shore — Hanalei Bay, Princeville, Kīlauea Lighthouse — before returning to Līhuʻe. Flight times typically run 60 to 80 minutes depending on operator. One real consideration on Kauai: weather. The Nā Pali Coast generates its own micro-weather along the cliffs, and clouds can shut down or shorten a tour with little warning. Operators do their own go/no-go calls based on cloud ceiling and wind, and a postponement on day one of a four-day Kauai trip is no big deal — a postponement on the last morning before your flight home is a different conversation. Book scenic flights toward the front of any Kauai stay, not the back.

Maui’s scenic flight scene is the most helicopter-dominated of the four big islands. The headline tour route — Hāna and Haleakalā or the West Maui Mountain valleys — is best served by a helicopter that can drop down into the tight inland valleys and creep up to inaccessible waterfalls, which is exactly the kind of flying small fixed-wing planes cannot do.

Fixed-wing scenic plane tours from Maui still exist and serve a specific niche: getting a wider, higher view of multiple islands on the same flight. If your reason for wanting to fly on Maui is specifically Hāna’s waterfalls or the inaccessible West Maui valleys, a helicopter is genuinely the better choice and the price premium is the price of doing that job. If your reason is “I want a wide aerial view of the islands and a memory of being up there,” a fixed-wing plane out of Kahului holds up well.

A few practical things that apply across all the formats above.

Book early on the front end of your trip, not the back end. Weather days happen on all of these aircraft, and rescheduling is easier when you have days of slack ahead of your departure flight. This is especially true on Kauai, where Nā Pali weather is volatile, and at Dillingham, where glider operations depend on wind direction and cloud ceiling.

Dress in light layers and avoid loose clothing. Cabin temperatures in small planes can run cool at altitude, and any open-cockpit biplane ride is genuinely windy — scarves, hats, and loose sunglasses can get whipped off. Biplane operators will provide goggles and a leather flight helmet.

Motion sickness is real and predictable in small aircraft. The fixed-wing and biplane experience is similar to a light-turbulence commercial flight; the glider experience can be smoother (no engine vibration) or rougher (sharper banking to find lift) depending on the day. Take whatever motion-sickness remedy you would use on a boat tour — ginger, Bonine, Dramamine, or acupressure bands — about an hour before. If you struggle with helicopter rides specifically, a glider or fixed-wing scenic flight is generally more forgiving than a helicopter, not less.

Plan the airport transit honestly. Dillingham Airfield is about 45 minutes from Waikīkī, and TheBus takes over two and a half hours with multiple transfers — not realistic for a scheduled flight time. A rental car is the practical way to get there. Plenty of trips still call for a helicopter. If your only flight day is on Maui and your goal is Hāna or the inaccessible West Maui valleys, a helicopter is the format that does that job. If you want the doors-off photography experience, that is a helicopter category. If your itinerary on the Big Island has a single scenic-flight window and you specifically want hovering time over an active lava lake, a helicopter has more flexibility than a fixed-wing plane. And if budget is genuinely not the constraint and you want the standard Hawaii bucket-list aerial tour, the helicopter ride is the one most visitors do and the one that has the most operators competing for the booking.
