Start with one question: are you looking for a game, or a court? Choose a hosted open-play session if you want to join other players. Reserve a court if your group wants its own time. If you are counting on resort access, check exactly what your stay includes before choosing a hotel around it.

The equipment question matters just as much. A public park may have pickleball lines without a permanent net. This guide compares options on Oahu, Maui, the Big Island and Kauai, with the questions to settle before you fit a game into your island day.

Four questions before you go

Ask the club, session host or parks office:

1. Is this session open to visitors on my date and at my skill level?
2. Am I joining open play or reserving a court for my own group?
3. Who supplies the paddles, balls, net and any temporary lines?
4. What is the total fee for my party, and what are the booking and cancellation terms?

Use a directory to find a contact, then confirm the session. Ask how players rotate rather than assume every court follows the paddle-stacking system you use at home.

Oahu: check the net before the address

The Honolulu parks court list warns that most listed courts have pickleball lines without permanent nets. Its entries cover several kinds of shared courts, not just tennis courts. A location on the list is not a confirmed organized game.

Useful distinctions from the city list and the Oahu Pickleball Association directory:

• Keehi Lagoon Beach Park: 12 dedicated pickleball courts. Ask about the session you want to join.
• Kailua District Park: eight courts total, four dedicated and four lined on tennis courts, with lights.
• Mother Waldron Neighborhood Park: two dedicated courts, without lights, according to OPA.
• Ala Moana Regional Park: three courts listed on practice-tennis space. Confirm who supplies a pickleball net before planning a game there.

For Fort DeRussy, confirm the actual court setup and visitor session with the facility before going; the city and OPA lists linked above do not establish four dedicated courts with daily open play there.

Pickles at Forté offers an air-conditioned indoor option in downtown Honolulu, with day passes, visitor memberships and coaching. Ask which session your pass covers and whether equipment is included. A public-court plan and a paid indoor session need different arrangements.

Maui: distinguish a public session from a hotel benefit

OHANA Pickleball Club at Kaanapali Beach Resort lists 12 covered or shaded, lighted courts, open play beginning at 8am, drop-ins and free parking. Check its booking link for your date and ask about equipment and the session fee.

For Hyatt Regency Maui guests, the hotel’s resort-fee policy includes two OHANA drop-in/open-play passes per room, per stay, with standard paddle rental included. Additional passes cost extra. For a family planning several games, confirm how many passes you need and how to use them; the benefit is not two passes for every person on every day.

The Four Seasons Resort Maui’s own pages give different court counts: its amenities page lists three lit pickleball courts, while its Experiences page advertises five new, fully lit courts. Confirm the current setup with the resort. The amenities page says guests may reserve one hour per day, with extended play subject to availability and cancellation fees applicable; it arranges tennis off-site at Wailea Tennis Club. If you are not staying at the resort, ask about eligibility before assuming you can buy public drop-in access.

For Wailea Tennis Club, ask specifically about pickleball. The current club page describes tennis courts, rates and instruction. It does not establish the ten dedicated pickleball courts previously described here. Confirm pickleball availability with the pro shop rather than book a tennis court expecting a pickleball session. This is an unconfirmed pickleball offering, not a closure notice.

For a South Maui public option, the Pickleball Maui directory lists eight dedicated courts at the northern end of the Waipuilani Park tennis facility in Kihei. It also lists West Maui public locations, private rental and lessons in Kula, and community gyms. Check the relevant contact for the session, equipment and current access before driving over.

Big Island: a paddle and a net are separate questions

Hōlua Racquet & Paddle in Kailua-Kona lists 20 dedicated courts and welcomes visitors. Its published prices distinguish $15 per person per open-play session from $10 per person per hour for a private court reservation. Confirm the current total for your party before booking.

The FAQ specifically says to bring your own paddle. Check the calendar for the date and format you want: the displayed Friday afternoon slot says no public open play, while the Saturday round robin requires advance registration and depends on the tournament and special-event schedule. Do not assume every displayed court hour is a public drop-in session.

The Hawaii County parks directory says participants or organizers must supply nets. Some locations also require temporary lines; tape is not allowed, while rubber throw-down lines or similar systems may be used.

• Hilo: Ho‘olulu Outdoor Courts and Mohouli Park each list four first-come courts. Check individual gym entries for reservation requirements.
• Kona: Kailua Park Outdoor Courts list nine painted-line courts, three requiring reservations and six first-come. Do not interpret that as nine permanent pickleball nets.

Contact the facility or a session organizer about equipment and current arrangements. A first-come listing does not promise partners, loaner paddles or a hosted game.

For the Waikoloa Village Association, current owner or guest amenity cards are required for tennis-court access. Do not confuse association facilities with a coastal resort’s amenities. If you want to play at your hotel, including Hilton Waikoloa Village, ask it to confirm current pickleball access, equipment and fees before booking around the activity.

Kauai: contact the host before dropping in

The Pickleball Association Kauai court directory explicitly asks visitors to contact the listed hosts before dropping in. Use that court directory for contacts, rather than its separate visitor-profile stories.

• Poipu Beach Athletic Club: PAK lists six courts total, four permanent and two lined. The club’s drop-in page describes all-skill gameplay; ask the club for the current visitor fee, booking method and equipment.
• Poipu Kai: PAK lists visitor day passes and a separate doubles round robin. Confirm which option fits your group.
• Hanalei Bay Resort, Princeville: PAK lists six courts with permanent nets and fees to play; contact the listed host about reservations, lessons and visitor arrangements.
• Wilcox Elementary School: PAK lists four temporary-net courts and organized sessions. Contact the host before arrival; do not assume unrestricted school-ground access.
• Kalaheo: distinguish Kalawai Park’s tennis-court listing from the separately listed Kalaheo Gym. Ask the host which facility is being used.

The directory still displays some closure labels with anticipated completion dates that have passed. An elapsed date does not confirm reopening. Check the current playing location with the host before traveling, particularly for the Hanapepe and Kekaha entries.

Packing and fitting a game into the day

Bring your own paddle unless rental is confirmed. For a public court, settle the net and line arrangements too.
