Things to Do near Waimea on Kauai
Waimea is Kauai's west-side gateway town, best known as the starting point for Waimea Canyon Drive. It is drier, quieter, and more practical than the north or south resort areas, with food stops and services that matter before heading up the mountain.
Recovery access check — October 21, 2026: DLNR’s recovery notice keeps Waimea Canyon and Kōkeʻe state parks closed. The County’s October 19 update also keeps Salt Pond Beach Park and its pavilions closed. Plan a town stop separately; do not count on these parks as current add-ons.

1. Waimea Canyon
Waimea Canyon is a future-trip idea while the state park remains closed. Check the official park notice before putting its overlooks or hikes into a confirmed itinerary.
Before paying for a sightseeing tour, ask the operator which stops are actually available under the current road and park restrictions. A tour booking does not override a closure.
2. Kokee State Park
Kōkeʻe State Park remains closed. Do not plan its trails, upland birdwatching, or Kalalau Lookout as current stops. HDOT lists the Waimea Canyon Drive/Kōkeʻe Road junction as open, with local traffic only beyond it; that is not visitor clearance for the park.
3. Waimea Canyon Drive Audio Route
Keep the Waimea Canyon Drive audio route as a planning reference for a future visit after access is confirmed. Its suggested stops do not establish that roads, parks, or lookouts are open.
4. Waimea Town and West-Side Food
Use Waimea town for a food or shopping stop and confirm individual businesses’ hours. Keep the town visit independent of the closed upland parks rather than building your meal timing around a canyon drive.
5. Hanapepe Town; Leave Salt Pond Out
Consider Hanapepe’s town stops if they fit your route and current conditions. Salt Pond Beach Park and its pavilions remain closed. Check Travel Alerts before adding a beach stop.

Allow: A town stop separately from any future canyon day. Best for: West Side food, shops, and practical trip planning during recovery.
Choose a different plan if: You require canyon viewpoints or upland trails; Waimea Canyon and Kokee state parks remain closed.
