I would choose one side of the island and build around it. Pick Kona for coffee, Waimea or the Kohala Coast for the film-and-music combination, or Hilo for the garden tours, parade, or final HIFF weekend. From a Hilo base, leave a separate day for Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. Trying to collect all three turns a vacation into a windshield tour.

• November 7, 9 a.m. to noon: UH Hilo offers three free Arbor Day tours at its campus botanical garden. The middle tour starts at the same time as the parade downtown.
• November 7, 10 a.m.: The Hawaiʻi Island Veterans Day Parade takes place in downtown Hilo. It is scheduled for Saturday, not the November 11 holiday.
• November 7-8: The Hawaiʻi International Film Festival lists its Waimea screenings at Kahilu Theatre.
• November 12-15: HIFF lists its Hilo screenings at the Palace Theater.
• November 13-14: Kahilu Theatre's 24th Annual ʻUkulele & Slack Key Guitar Festival brings concerts, workshops, and a Saturday kanikapila to Waimea.

A weeklong Waimea or Kohala Coast stay can work well: catch HIFF at Kahilu on November 7-8, then return for the music festival on November 13-14. Hilo’s HIFF run overlaps the November 13-14 music program, but that is a cross-island pairing, not a tidy doubleheader. Build a final-weekend Hilo plan around the Palace Theater instead, and check HIFF’s film-by-film schedule before committing to a screening.

The Kona Coffee Cultural Festival is the firmest ten-day anchor. The official 2026 schedule opens Friday, November 6, with a Made in Hawaiʻi artisan market, lantern parade, and multicultural showcase. The Hōlualoa Coffee & Art Stroll follows on Saturday, November 7. Farm experiences and tastings fill the weekdays before the November 14 half marathon and hoʻolauleʻa.

Do not book by the festival banner alone. Individual events use different venues and admission rules. The organizer says a $10 festival button is required for many activities, while some programs have separate admission charges. Check the exact event page before paying.

I would stay in Kailua-Kona, Keauhou, Hōlualoa, or Captain Cook if coffee is the point of the trip. That keeps the festival clustered along the Kona side instead of adding a cross-island drive. Waimea has two separate programs at Kahilu Theatre. HIFF46 lists its Hawaiʻi Island Waimea window for November 7-8. One week later, Kahilu’s ʻUkulele & Slack Key Guitar Festival runs Friday and Saturday, November 13-14.

Kahilu’s two-day pass page is confusing at first glance: the card is indexed under November 12, while the detailed program lists a Friday 7 p.m. Hoʻolauleʻa on November 13 and Saturday programs on November 14. Use the detailed schedule, then confirm the ticket page again before purchase. Saturday’s official kanikapila listing starts at 2 p.m. and invites audience members to bring instruments and join festival artists onstage.

Base a theater-focused stay in Waimea, where Kahilu Theatre is located. A Kohala Coast resort also works if beach time matters as much as the shows, but leave a real driving buffer. I would not base in Kona solely to commute to two Kahilu nights. The map looks manageable until darkness, rain, and unfamiliar roads enter the equation.

The Veterans Day parade begins at 10 a.m. Saturday, November 7, with the theme “Celebrate Service.”

At the UH Hilo Botanical Garden, the Arbor Day tours each focus on a different plant group: cycads at 9 a.m., bromeliads at 10 a.m., and palms at 11 a.m. All three are free, and the university says no registration is required. If you want the bromeliad tour, spend the morning on campus. If you came for the parade, stay downtown; don’t count on seeing it through and still making the 11 a.m. palm tour.

For the parade, check the organizer’s route page before planning your arrival. Its heading gives the 2026 start date, but a lower section still labels route details and the marching order for 2025. Confirm current access and parking with the organizer; do not use the older section as a 2026 road-closure timetable.

HIFF’s current guide places the Palace Theater run in Hilo from November 12-15. The festival says neighbor-island tickets must be purchased through venue websites or local box offices, not the Oʻahu box office. The island window is confirmed, but the specific films and showtimes still decide whether a night works.

Hilo is the right base if the film weekend should share the trip with waterfalls, the east side, or Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. Do not pair an evening Palace screening with a casual dinner reservation in Kona. The drive is the divider. Check the official HIFF guide and the venue before buying around one film. A statewide festival logo does not mean every title plays on every island.
