This trip works best when you book the hard pieces early and avoid building the whole week around a single holiday meal.

I would not choose Thanksgiving for a low-cost Hawaii trip without first checking other November dates. If budget leads the decision, search the first half of the month too.

The key decision is island count. For a shorter Thanksgiving trip, pick one island. Four or five nights disappear quickly with airport time and a rental car. Keep Thanksgiving Day itself simple. If you have seven nights or more, a two-island trip can work.

• The Pearl Harbor Visitor Center is closed on Thanksgiving Day. The National Park Service also lists it as closed on December 25 and January 1. If Pearl Harbor matters to the trip, schedule it before or after Thanksgiving and reserve the USS Arizona Memorial program early. Check the NPS operating-hours page.
• Start your dinner search with restaurants at or near your resort. Check each venue's menu, price, and public availability. Reserve once lodging is set, then reconfirm during travel week.
• Check each independent restaurant directly before making plans, including venues in Waikīkī, Wailea, Kāʻanapali, Pōʻipū, Princeville, and the Kohala Coast.
• Keep the day simple, but verify access and holiday hours even for beaches, pools, parks, and self-guided walks. Save high-demand tours and long drives for another day.

My default plan is beach or pool time in the morning, followed by one reserved Thanksgiving meal. I skip cross-island driving after dark.

I keep Thanksgiving dinner close to the room. A special meal loses its shine if it requires a long night drive and leaves a tired family hunting for parking on an unfamiliar island.

In Waikīkī, I would choose a walkable dinner fallback before booking. On Maui, check Wailea and Kāʻanapali first. On Kauaʻi, start with Pōʻipū or Princeville. On the Big Island, look around the Kohala Coast and Kailua-Kona. Smaller towns can have excellent local food, but Thanksgiving Day is not the day to improvise without a confirmed reservation.

A luau can also work if the operator runs a Thanksgiving-night seating. Treat it as a scheduling question, not a guarantee. The 2026 calendar gives you two clear event paths: make the Maui Invitational your pre-Thanksgiving anchor, or stay on Oʻahu for the holiday weekend. Do not island-hop just to collect both.

• From November 23-25, the Southwest Maui Invitational returns to Lahaina Civic Center for the three days before Thanksgiving. The official site has posted the eight-team field and 2026 bracket. If the tournament is the reason for the trip, choose West Maui lodging and settle tickets and transportation before adding dinner plans. The final games are Wednesday, so Thanksgiving Day can stay simple.
• On Friday, November 27, the Waikīkī Holiday Parade organizer confirms the date and says the parade travels down Kalākaua Avenue in Waikīkī. GoHawaii's current listing identifies Fort DeRussy as the start, Kapiʻolani Park as the end, and 7 p.m. as the start time. Stay in Waikīkī and walk to the route. Recheck the organizer's site before locking dinner or transportation around it.
• On Saturday, November 28, downtown Honolulu's free 55th Annual Holiday Craft Fair is listed for 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. with more than 40 vendors at Hawaiian Mission Houses. The City and County of Honolulu's current 2026 Kapolei City Lights page lists a 5-9 p.m. block party around Kapolei Hale in West Oʻahu. Pick the event nearest your lodging instead of turning Saturday into a cross-island checklist.

Black Friday in Hawaii is useful if you are already near a shopping district. It is not worth rearranging the trip around. Ala Moana Center is a practical stop if you are in Honolulu. Waikīkī retail centers and local markets can also fit the day, but check current hours and promotions before going.

My advice is to use Black Friday as a low-energy day after Thanksgiving dinner. Sleep in, stay close to your hotel, and shop only if it fits the day you already wanted. Do not give up a good beach morning for a deal you could have bought online from home.

Maui, Kauaʻi, and the Big Island can fit a quieter resort week, but I plan them more tightly around drive times and confirmed reservations. Do not make Thanksgiving Day the busiest day of the trip. Keep it simple with beach time and a reserved meal. Put Pearl Harbor, long hikes, boat trips, coffee farms, and North Shore surf watching on the days before or after.
