Most Hawaii trips begin in a baggage claim. Stale plane air, a long flight behind you, the luggage carousel grinding. That first sense that you have actually arrived doesn’t come until you step outside under the open-air walkway and the warm Pacific air hits.

For one specific kind of visitor, it comes a few minutes sooner. A stranger says your name at the curb, lifts a fresh flower lei over your head, and welcomes you in Hawaiian. That moment is the airport lei greeting, and it is one of the simpler, cheaper, and more memorable upgrades you can buy for a Hawaii trip. It costs less than a nice dinner. It takes five minutes. And for a first trip, a milestone birthday, a proposal, a honeymoon, a multi-generational family reunion, or a grandparent’s first time across the Pacific, it sets the tone of the entire visit in a way nothing else does.

Here is how to book one, what to expect at each of the four main visitor airports, what it actually costs, who to call, and how to pick a lei that fits the person and the occasion.

The mechanics are simple. You book the service in advance with a vendor, give them your arrival flight, terminal, and the names of the people being greeted. A greeter holds a sign with your name at the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) lei-greeting waiting area or at the curb at the smaller neighbor-island terminals, drapes the lei, gives the traditional honi (a brief hug and cheek touch, optional and skippable if the traveler prefers not), takes a photo if asked, and sees you on your way. The lei itself is a real, fresh, hand-strung flower lei made that morning. Not a plastic souvenir or a silk replica. The living, fragrant, deliberately temporary kind, the same form Hawaiians have used to welcome people, mark occasions, and honor relationships for centuries.

The greeting service is sold as a meet-and-assist package: the greeter, the lei, and a brief curbside handoff. Some vendors bundle in extras like a souvenir kukui-nut lei for the photograph, a photo printout, or a small bottle of water. Most upcharge for nicer lei (a double-strand orchid versus a single-strand plumeria, for example) or for higher-status leis like a maile open lei for grooms and male graduates.

One piece of etiquette to bank now, since it matters at the curb: bow your head slightly as the lei is placed, say “mahalo,” and wear it for the rest of the afternoon. The traditional and broadly understood expectation in Hawaii is that lei are not refused, and they are meant to be worn, not bagged.

The airport lei greeting is a modern version of a very old custom. The Bishop Museum in Honolulu, the principal museum of the Pacific, documents lei across centuries of Hawaiian life as a vehicle of aloha and respect. Lei marked rank, ceremony, friendship, birth, marriage, death, victory, peace. They were given to honor ali’i (chiefs), to bless voyages, and to welcome guests. The mass dockside greetings of the ocean-liner era are gone, but the pre-booked service stayed available, and independent travelers can still buy in.

The cultural anchor matters because it changes how to think about the moment. The greeting is not theater. The greeter is not a costumed performer. They are doing a real Hawaiian welcome on behalf of the islands, and the lei being placed is being given, not sold to you as a souvenir.

Every Hawaii airport that serves the trans-Pacific traveler supports lei-greeting service, but the curb setup, the meeting point, and the vendor mix differ slightly.

HNL is the big one. The Hawaii Department of Transportation describes HNL as the primary airport for the state and one of the busiest in the United States, and it is the main hub for international and trans-Pacific flights. The lei-greeting setup at HNL is the most elaborate. Most major vendors meet guests at designated areas outside the secured baggage-claim level (the exact spot varies by terminal and by international vs. domestic arrivals) and also offer curbside meet-and-greet at the assigned passenger pickup zone for guests who prefer not to make the walk.

HNL handles the highest volume of arrivals, so it has the most vendor competition. That means lower base prices and more lei choices. Same-day flight changes are typically accommodated when the vendor is notified before the original arrival window, but confirm the rebook policy with your specific operator at the time of booking.

OGG is Maui’s primary airport and, per the Hawaii Department of Transportation, the second busiest in the state. Curbside pickup is straightforward; the airport is small enough that “the greeter will be at the assigned passenger pickup zone with a sign” is enough to find each other. Maui vendors lean toward locally grown lei varieties (lots of tuberose, plumeria, and a strong local craft tradition around braided ti-leaf lei). KOA is one of the more distinctive airport experiences in the country. The Hawaii Department of Transportation describes it as the largest open-air airport in the world: most of the gate areas and the walk to baggage have no ceiling, just lava-rock landscaping and Hawaiian-style thatched-roof structures. Airport lei greeting service is priced in tiers based on the lei. The ranges below reflect 2026 pricing across the major operators; always check the current vendor page, since lei pricing tracks the flower market and moves over time:

• Single-strand entry-level lei (orchid, dendrobium, plumeria) — roughly $30 to $45 per person, all-in. Classic orchid is the most common entry-tier choice across vendors.
• Premium single or double-strand lei (tuberose, double-strand orchid, kukui nut with shells) — roughly $45 to $70 per person.
• Specialty lei (maile open lei, braided ti-leaf, pikake, double-double designs) — typically $75 and up. Maile lei greetings sit in the mid-$80s at the major operators, and elaborate maile arrangements climb well into three figures.
• Add-on extras — printed photo, additional second lei, kukui-nut keepsake, candy lei for kids, all priced à la carte.

For a couple, expect to spend in the range of a nice restaurant meal. For a multi-generational family of six or eight, the math grows quickly, which is when the choice between single-strand and premium lei starts to matter. Most vendors offer a per-person discount for groups, which is worth asking about explicitly when booking.

On tipping: vendors are clear that gratuity is not included and not required, but it is welcomed. Cash is the norm, and a few dollars to about $10 per greeter is a common gesture of thanks.

A handful of established Hawaii-based vendors handle airport lei greeting. Cross-shop rather than going with the first result on a search:

• Greeters of Hawaii — a long-running operator with coverage at all four main airports (HNL, OGG, KOA, LIH). Their site has a clear menu of single-strand, double-strand, premium, and maile options, plus a meet-and-assist package for senior travelers or anyone wanting a guided walk from gate to ride.
• Lei Greeting Hawaii — also covers HNL, OGG, KOA, and LIH per their site. Standard tiered pricing and the typical lei options.
• Hotel concierges and inbound tour operators — for travelers booking through a travel agent, a destination wedding planner, or a vacation-package wholesaler, the greeting can often be bundled into the welcome package. Frequently the easiest path, sometimes at a small upcharge over going direct.

Two cautions when shopping. First, this is a category where photos on vendor websites are sometimes generic stock images that may not look like the actual lei you receive. Pictures of the specific lei type (plumeria, orchid, tuberose) on a vendor’s lei-options page are the better reference. Second, vendors with no Hawaii address, no Hawaii phone number, and no clear sense of which airport gate area they cover should be treated with healthy skepticism. The real local operators all have Hawaii presence.

Lei selection sounds like a fussy decision and isn’t. A few editorial shortcuts based on who you are picking up:

• First-time visitor, no special occasion — single-strand orchid or plumeria. Both are highly recognizable, photograph beautifully, and travel well in a hot car. Plumeria has a stronger fragrance.
• Honeymoon or anniversary — double-strand orchid or a pikake for the woman, maile open lei for the man. Pikake is the white Hawaiian jasmine, intensely fragrant, and traditionally used at weddings. Maile is the open-style lei worn untied around the neck, traditionally given to ali'i and now to grooms and graduates.
• Multi-generational family with grandparents — premium tuberose or double-strand orchid for the grandparents, kukui-nut leis (non-floral, travel home easily) for the kids. One of the better arrival photos of the trip.
• Graduation or milestone trip — maile open lei for the graduate. This carries the strongest cultural weight of any lei available and is the right choice for someone reaching a significant life moment.
• Heat-sensitive flights or extra-long layovers — orchid is the toughest of the standard floral lei. Plumeria browns faster. If your flight arrives late afternoon and you have a long drive ahead, mention this and the vendor can choose accordingly.

Two notes on care. Fresh flower lei typically last two to four days with proper care: mist them with water, store them in the refrigerator overnight, and keep them out of direct heat. When the lei is done, the traditional and respectful disposal is to return it to the earth or the sea (untie it, separate the flowers, and let them go) rather than tossing it in a hotel-room trash can. The hotel landscapers have seen plenty of retired lei in their gardens. It is the right place for them.

The booking process is more like reserving an airport ride than a restaurant. Most vendors accept reservations from a few days out to months in advance:

• Book the trip first, then the greeting. Confirm your arrival airport, terminal (HNL has multiple), flight number, and inbound airline.
• Lock in the lei choice and number of people. Count adults and kids separately. Most vendors offer kid-priced kukui-nut or candy lei.
• Decide on the meeting point. At HNL, designated lei-greeting waiting area or curbside. At the smaller airports, curbside is almost universally easier.
• Pay the deposit. Most vendors charge a deposit at booking and the balance on day of service or in advance.
• Share the greeter's contact with the traveler. If you are booking a greeting for someone else's arrival (a child flying solo, an in-law, a graduate), put the greeter's name and phone number in the traveler's itinerary or a quick pre-flight text. It removes the "where am I supposed to go" panic at baggage claim.

One booking tip that matters: if the trip includes inter-island flights after a mainland arrival, book the greeting only for the first Hawaii touchdown. TSA generally allows fresh flowers through security, but heat, handling, and a layover without water are hard on a delicate flower lei. Most Hawaii trips do not need a booked lei greeting. Plenty of arriving visitors get off the plane, find the rental-car shuttle, and drive directly to a hotel. That is a perfectly fine version of arrival.

• First-trip travelers. The first Hawaii arrival is a once. Getting it right with a lei moment in the first ten minutes off the plane sets a tone for the entire week.
• Multi-generational reunions. Grandparents who have never been to Hawaii (or have not been in 30 years) responding to a real flower lei placed by a real Hawaiian greeter is one of the better arrival photos a family will ever have.
• Surprises and proposals. Coordinating a greeter for a partner who does not know the trip is happening adds a useful layer of "this is real and it is starting now" the moment they walk out of baggage claim.
• Senior or first-time-overseas travelers. The meet-and-assist version walks travelers from gate to rideshare, takes the airport navigation off their plate, and includes the lei. The gentlest possible Hawaii arrival.

Buying a fresh lei at the airport afterward (without a greeting service) is harder than it looks. HNL has a couple of florist shops in the terminals and a cart that rotates through some baggage-claim carousels as flights arrive, but the timing is unpredictable and the selection is limited.
