You’ll notice them within an hour of landing on Kauai. A red-and-gold rooster crossing the Lihue Costco parking lot like he owns it. A hen and seven chicks picking their way across the rental car return. A whole flock spilling out from under a hedge at the Poipu shopping center.

Hawaii’s feral chickens are a permanent feature of the islands, especially Kauai. By the second day you’ll have stopped photographing them. By the third day, if your hotel room window faces an open lot or a hedge, you may be wondering whether earplugs were the most important thing you forgot to pack.

They’re called moa in Hawaiian. They’re not native, they’re not really wild in the traditional sense, and they’re not entirely domestic either. The story of how Kauai ended up with thousands of them, and why the other Hawaiian islands have far fewer, is one of the more interesting accidents of modern Hawaiʻi.

Here’s what’s actually going on, and what to do about it as a visitor.

Long before any hurricane, Hawaiʻi already had chickens. Polynesian voyagers brought them on the founding canoes, along with pigs, taro, and the rest of the bundle of “canoe plants and animals” that made these islands livable. The birds they brought were Red Junglefowl, Gallus gallus, the wild ancestor of every chicken on Earth. In Hawaiian they’re called moa, and that name is the one you’ll hear locals on Kauai still use for a wild rooster today (Red Junglefowl background).

For centuries, moa lived semi-feral around Hawaiian villages and in the forest understory. They were small, lean, and decent fliers — nothing like a modern Cornish hen. A 2022 genetic study published in Heredity sampled feral chickens across Kauai and found that the modern population is a hybrid: part ancestral Red Junglefowl, part 20th-century domestic breeds that escaped or were released later (“Population structure and hybridisation in a population of Hawaiian feral chickens,” Nature/Heredity, 2022). The roosters with the long iridescent green-black tails and the golden hackles around the neck are the ones running closest to the original junglefowl phenotype. The frumpier brown ones are descendants of escaped layer hens.

The reason Kauai today has flocks in every parking lot, and Oahu mostly doesn’t, comes down to two storms and one missing predator.

First, Hurricane Iwa in November 1982. It was the strongest storm to hit Hawaiʻi in a generation up to that point, and it tore open a fair number of agricultural buildings on Kauai (Hurricane Iwa overview). Some chicken coops went with them.

Then, ten years later, Hurricane Iniki. It made landfall on Kauai on September 11, 1992, as a Category 4 storm with sustained winds around 145 mph. It is still the costliest hurricane ever to hit Hawaiʻi, with damages totaling about $3.1 billion in 1992 dollars and seven deaths statewide (Wikipedia summary of Iniki; Hawaii Department of Defense retrospective).

Iniki destroyed 1,421 homes on Kauai and caused major damage to another 5,152. About 70 percent of the homes and businesses on the island were damaged or destroyed, and the entire island lost power for weeks to months.

Buried in those numbers is a smaller line item that nobody bothered to count: how many backyard chicken coops and small commercial layer operations got blown apart in one night. The answer was a lot. Domestic hens and fighting roosters poured out into the rainforest at the same time, met the existing semi-feral moa population, and started interbreeding. Within a couple of years Kauai had a self-sustaining hybrid feral population that was much larger than what existed before 1982 (Modern Farmer, “The Mystery of Kauai’s Thousands of Feral Chickens,” 2015).

Iniki hit Kauai hardest, but Iwa hit other islands too, and Oahu has its own backyard cockfighting subculture that occasionally seeds the wild population. So why does Kauai have visibly far more feral chickens than any other island?

The accepted answer is the small Indian mongoose. In 1883, the Hawaiian sugarcane industry imported mongooses from Jamaica to control rats in the cane fields. They were released on the Big Island, then on Maui, Molokai, and Oahu. Kauai was the only major island that never received them (U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service overview of the small Indian mongoose in Hawaiʻi; Hawaii Invasive Species Council profile).

The popular legend is that on the day the mongoose cages arrived at Nawiliwili Harbor, a mongoose bit a dockworker, the dockworker threw the cage into the water in a rage, and that was the end of the introduction effort. The historical record is hazier than the story is fun, but the bottom line is correct: Kauai has no mongooses. The other major islands do.

Mongooses eat eggs and chicks. On Oahu, Maui, and the Big Island, they keep feral chicken populations from running away the way they have on Kauai. They also (less helpfully) eat the eggs of native ground-nesting Hawaiian birds, which is its own conservation tragedy. But for our purposes here, the absence of one predator on one island is most of why Kauai’s chickens are everywhere and the other islands’ chickens are rarer and patchier.

Locals will point you to feral chickens on the other islands too — flocks around parts of Oahu’s North Shore, Waimānalo, and a few Honolulu neighborhoods (City and County of Honolulu’s feral chicken page; KHON2 reporting that Honolulu has captured nearly 2,000 feral chickens since 2022), and patchy populations in Maui’s Haleakalā foothills and parts of the Big Island’s Puna and Kona districts. But none of those islands has Kauai’s density. Drive past Kapaa at sunset and you’ll see what unrestricted breeding for thirty years actually looks like.

Here is the part nobody warns first-time Kauai visitors about clearly enough.

Roosters do not crow only at dawn. That’s a children’s-book myth. Roosters crow in response to a long list of triggers: any change in light (a passing car’s headlights, a porch sensor, a hotel walkway lamp clicking on), any noise from another rooster within earshot, and at random intervals on their own internal clock. Multiple roosters within earshot of each other will start a chain reaction: one bird crows, the next one across the lot answers, and the relay can continue for an hour. A reasonably committed rooster is loud — in the same ballpark as a power lawnmower at close range, which the CDC pegs at around 90 decibels (CDC NIOSH noise exposure reference).

What this means for a visitor is simple. If you’re a light sleeper and you’re staying anywhere on Kauai with windows that face open ground, hedges, or any kind of vegetated area, you will hear roosters in the dead middle of the night.

Larger resorts in Poipu and Princeville tend to be quieter than nearby vacation rentals — the bigger properties run abatement programs and trap on their grounds — but no resort can promise silence. Smaller condos and B&Bs in Kapaa, Wailua, and Hanalei are a coin flip. Earplugs are not optional luggage on Kauai if you sleep poorly through noise.

The chickens look cute at the trailhead. They are, in fact, cute at the trailhead. The trouble starts at the picnic table.

A feral rooster that has learned humans drop food is a very different animal from one that hasn’t. The fed birds get bold, and they get fast. Beat of Hawaii covered an incident in September 2025 in which a Poipu Beach Park rooster lunged at a 95-year-old visitor and grabbed food directly from her hand — not a snatched scrap from a plate, an aggressive hand-grab from someone who could not get out of the way (Beat of Hawaii, “What Happened When A Rooster Grabbed Breakfast At Poipu Beach Park”). It happens at every beach park on the island. The standard Kauai county guidance is the same as the standard guidance for monk seals and honu: don’t feed them, and don’t let them get familiar with you. A bird that learns the picnic-table reward loop becomes the next picnic table’s problem, then the next.

There is also a real avian-flu surveillance angle. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s bird-flu monitoring program treats feral fowl as a watchlist population (USDA APHIS avian influenza surveillance program). For a healthy adult traveler photographing a rooster from six feet away, the practical risk is low, but the risk is not zero — and that is the simple reason not to handle a wild chicken or let a child hand-feed one.

Photograph from a respectful distance, the same way you would a honu sunning on the sand. Don’t chase them for a better angle. Definitely don’t try to pet a rooster — that’s how you find out the spurs are real.

Hawaiʻi’s feral chickens occupy a gray legal zone that frustrates everyone. They aren’t a protected species the way honu and Hawaiian monk seals are. They aren’t a recognized game bird the way pheasants and quail are. They aren’t anyone’s pet. So who’s in charge of them is a chronically open question.

Honolulu’s expanded trapping program — the one that has caught roughly 2,000 birds since 2022 — has been running on existing county budgets. Then in July 2024, then-Governor Josh Green signed SB2401, which set up a state-funded program to help counties expand feral chicken control efforts and required a public-education component about why feeding the birds makes the problem worse (Beat of Hawaii summary of SB2401, July 2024). The new state matching funds are how counties scale up the trapping work going forward.

A separate bill, HB980, was introduced in the 2025 session and carried over to the 2026 Regular Session. It would explicitly permit a private landowner to kill feral chickens on their own property with a written authorization, in response to growing concern about avian-flu transmission risk (Honolulu Star-Advertiser coverage, February 2026).

For a visitor, the practical takeaway is short: leave the chickens alone. Control of the population is the job of property owners, county contractors, and resort abatement programs — not your job, and not something your rental car company wants to hear that you tried.

If you want to see the moa at their most photogenic — the upright iridescent jungle-fowl-looking ones rather than the parking-lot generalists — a few honest spots based on our own time on the island:

Waimea Canyon and Kōkeʻe State Park. The forested high country on Kauai’s west side is where a lot of the closest-to-ancestral feral chickens live. The roosters here often have the long arched tails and the bright golden-red collars that give the species its common name. The canyon overlook parking lots all have flocks. The Kalalau Trail trailhead at Kēʻē Beach. Same west-side population, more tropical setting. The chickens here live inside Hāʻena State Park, a Hawaiʻi DLNR property that gates entry through gohaena.com, so visitor pressure is regulated.

Smith’s Tropical Paradise / Wailua River area. Mixed brown-and-rust birds with shorter tails — closer to layer-hen ancestry but still very much wild. Easy to see along the river paths.

Princeville and Hanalei. The Princeville golf-course edges and the residential neighborhoods toward Hanalei Bay are some of the densest feral chicken habitat we’ve encountered on Kauai. Drive slowly.

The other islands are worth a mention if you’re spending time there. On Oahu, the North Shore corridor between Haleʻiwa and Sunset Beach has a long-established flock you’ll see at the food-truck pull-offs. On the Big Island, scattered birds turn up between Hilo and Volcano. On Maui, small flocks live above Kula in the Haleakalā foothills. None of those approach Kauai-level density.

Hawaiʻi’s official state bird is the nene, the Hawaiian goose, currently federally listed as threatened after being downlisted from endangered in 2019 (U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service nene profile). Kauai is one of the recovery success stories — the Hanalei National Wildlife Refuge holds a healthy population (see our Hanalei viewpoint guide). The unofficial state bird, by long-running local consensus, is the rooster. T-shirts make the joke. Bumper stickers make the joke. Locals make the joke at every visitor who flinches at a 4 a.m. crow.

It is, in a real sense, accurate. Roosters are everywhere, they’re emblematic of the island, and the population trajectory of feral chickens on Kauai over the last 30 years is a small, weird parable about hurricanes, mongooses, and what happens when you take one predator out of a system. Pay attention to them. Photograph the showy ones. Don’t feed them. Pack the earplugs.

Hawaii’s feral chickens are real, they’re permanent, and on Kauai they’re loud. They came from Polynesian voyaging canoes centuries ago, got dramatically reinforced by Hurricane Iniki in 1992, and stayed numerous on Kauai because the mongoose never made it past Nawiliwili Harbor. They aren’t a protected species, they aren’t yours to deal with, and they aren’t going anywhere. Don’t feed them, don’t chase them, photograph the pretty ones from a respectful distance, and bring the earplugs. The rest of Kauai is worth the wakeup call.
