Maui: This is where people get stranded. The Road to Hāna has no regular gas stop between Pāʻia/Haʻikū and Hāna, and the drive is slow enough that “only fifty-something miles” is misleading. If you continue past Hāna toward Kīpahulu and the back side of Haleakalā, read your rental agreement first; many contracts restrict that road, and storm damage or maintenance can change access quickly.

Big Island: The Big Island is larger than visitors expect, and services thin out fast between the main towns. One-lane bridges define rural Hawaiian highways. The Road to Hāna has dozens of them, Kauai’s highway past Hanalei has several, and the Big Island’s Hāmākua Coast has a few. If you have never crossed one, here is the protocol.

Obey the posted sign and yield to traffic already committed to the bridge. Do not stop on the bridge or try to squeeze past another vehicle. A driver may wave or flash headlights to yield, but confirm that the bridge is clear before moving; an informal signal does not overrule a sign or another road user.

Slow before blind curves and bridge approaches so you have time to respond to an oncoming vehicle, pedestrian, cyclist, or stopped traffic.

Oahu has the most developed road system. H-1 and H-2 freeways carry heavy commuter traffic — avoid Honolulu between 7-9 a.m. and 3-6 p.m. if possible. The North Shore route (Kamehameha Highway) is two lanes and gets packed on weekends. Parking at popular North Shore beaches can fill early on Saturdays and holiday weekends.

Maui combines resort corridors with slow, winding rural roads. The Road to Hāna deserves a full-day plan with fuel, reservations, legal parking, a turnaround point, and a return before driver fatigue takes over. Do not force a loop around the island if current access or the rental agreement does not allow it.

Kauai has no road that circles the island. The Nā Pali Coast breaks the loop, so you drive out and back from either direction. Highway 56/560 ends at Keʻe Beach on the North Shore. The biggest driving mistake in Hawaiʻi is assuming yesterday’s access still applies today. Heavy rain can close low-water crossings, rockfall can narrow a coastal road, high surf can push debris onto shoreline routes, and a crash on a two-lane highway can turn a 20-minute drive into a two-hour wait.
