The single most common mistake I see with what to wear in Hawaii is that people dress for the Hawaii in their head instead of the Hawaii that actually exists. They pack like it's a beach resort and nothing else, then spend a freezing summit sunrise wrapped in a rental-car floor mat. Or they overpack formal clothes for restaurants that would happily seat them in shorts.

Two facts make the packing simple: Hawaii is more casual than almost anywhere you've been, and colder in more places than you'd guess. Get those straight and the rest sorts itself out. This is the honest rundown of what to actually wear, situation by situation, so you show up dressed right and never think about it again.

Hawaii runs on island casual, and it runs deep. The aloha shirt isn't tourist kitsch worn ironically. It's genuine local attire, recognized by the state legislature as acceptable business attire — a 1965 House resolution formally encouraged "Aloha Friday" so men could wear aloha shirts to work, and the practice stuck. A well-made aloha shirt with a collar reads as dressed up, not down, in most island settings. For everyday wear, think shorts, light dresses, breathable shirts, and a swimsuit you can throw something over. Cotton and linen beat synthetics in the humidity. Stick to lighter colors and loose cuts on the hot leeward sides, where the sun is relentless. You will almost never be underdressed in Hawaii. The mistakes run the other direction: too formal, too much, too heavy. Leave the blazer and the cocktail dresses home unless you have a specific event that needs them.

In Hawaii, flip-flops are "slippers" (locals say "slippahs"), and they're the unofficial state footwear. You'll live in them. But the more important thing they signal is a cultural habit that trips up a lot of visitors: shoes come off before you go inside.

Walk into almost any local home and you'll see a pile of slippers at the door. The same expectation often applies at vacation rentals, some small shops, cultural sites, and anywhere with a "please remove your shoes" sign. It's not a quirky request. It's a real sign of respect, and keeping the dirt and whatever-you-stepped-in outside is just good sense. Slip-on shoes make your life easier here for exactly this reason.

Slippers handle the beach, the resort, and casual dinners. They do not handle lava fields, muddy rainforest trails, or a sunrise hike, and that's a separate decision worth getting right. The Hawaii sun is closer to the equator and stronger than most mainland visitors expect. The smartest thing you can wear in the water isn't more sunscreen, it's a UPF rash guard. It protects your back and shoulders during the exact hours you're snorkeling face-down, and it never washes off in the surf. Pack one for everyone in the group and you'll cut your sunscreen use way down.

That matters here for a legal reason, not just a comfort one. Hawaii's statewide law banning sunscreens with oxybenzone and octinoxate took effect January 1, 2021. Maui County went further, restricting sales to mineral-only sunscreens as of October 1, 2022. One etiquette note: a swimsuit is beach attire, not town attire. Throwing a cover-up, light dress, or shirt over your suit before walking into a store, a cafe, or a hotel lobby is the local default. Nobody will chase you out for skipping it, but the cover-up is the move.

This is the one that catches people off guard, because "Hawaii" and "cold" don't seem to belong in the same sentence. They do. The islands stack up tall enough that you can leave an 85-degree beach in the morning and be genuinely freezing by the afternoon.

Haleakala on Maui. The summit sits above 10,000 feet, and the National Park Service warns that temperatures up top run at least 20 degrees colder than at sea level and often drop below freezing. At a sunrise viewing, you're looking at the 30s with wind chill pushing into the 20s. People show up in shorts and a tank top and suffer for it. Bring a real jacket, long pants, and a hat. Mauna Kea on the Big Island. Even more extreme. The summit reaches 13,803 feet, with the Visitor Information Station at 9,200 feet, and the summit can sit below freezing with snow in winter. Worth knowing before you plan a DIY drive: the University of Hawai'i, which manages the mountain, requires 4WD above the visitor station, and most major rental-car agreements prohibit taking their vehicles up there. The everyday version. You don't need a summit to get chilly. Rainforest valleys, upcountry towns, boat decks at dawn, helicopter tours, and aggressively air-conditioned restaurants all call for a light layer. A long-sleeve shirt or a packable rain jacket handles the surprise rain on the windward sides too. The whole island climate runs on those trade winds, which is also why a breezy evening can feel cooler than the thermometer says.

Most Hawaii restaurants, including very good ones, are happy to seat you in resort casual: a collared shirt or sundress, clean shorts or slacks, sandals. You almost never need a jacket and tie. The handful of exceptions are a few fine-dining rooms at the luxury resorts that ask for "resort evening" attire, which usually means a collared shirt and long pants for men and no swimwear or flip-flops. If you've booked somewhere special, a quick check of the restaurant's own site clears it up. When in doubt, a crisp aloha shirt is bulletproof.

For a luau, lean into it. This is the one night the aloha shirt or a flowy island dress is exactly right. You'll be outdoors on grass or sand, often near the water, so bring a light layer for when the sun drops and skip the heels. Hawaii has deeply sacred places, from heiau (temples) to burial sites to active places of worship. The dress expectation at these is simple: cover up a little more and behave like a guest, because you are one. Save the swimwear and the skimpy stuff for the beach.

If you visit a church service, a neat casual look is plenty, but it should be a step up from beach mode. At cultural sites, follow posted signs, stay on marked paths, and don't climb on or move rocks. The clothing is the easy part. The respect behind it is what actually matters, and it costs you nothing.

Strip away the noise and a Hawaii wardrobe is short. Here's the realistic packing core for a week:

The basics: swimsuits (two, so one can dry), light shirts and shorts, a sundress or two, one nicer aloha shirt or dress for dinners and a luau, and underthings. Lean breathable: cotton, linen, moisture-wicking blends.

The sun layer: a UPF rash guard, a wide-brim hat, polarized sunglasses, and reef-safe mineral sunscreen.

The warm layer: one packable jacket or fleece plus long pants. This is non-negotiable if a summit sunrise, a high-elevation drive, or a dawn boat trip is on your list, and useful even if it isn't.

The feet: slippers for everything casual and one pair of real closed-toe shoes for trails and lava. Slip-ons earn their keep with all the shoe-removing.

The rain shell: a thin packable layer for windward showers. It does double duty as your warm layer's outer shell.
