I treat what to wear in Hawaii as an itinerary question, not a fashion question. A suitcase built only for the beach fails on a muddy trail or a cold summit. A suitcase built for every possible condition becomes a closet with wheels.

Use your actual trip days as the filter. Label each one ocean, trail or lava, town, dinner or luau, summit, or pre-dawn boat. Then build a small clothing kit around the labels you really have. I start with clothes that can cross from a morning coffee stop to an afternoon walk: lightweight shirts, shorts, a light dress or skirt if you wear one, and one pair of long pants. Add enough swimwear to avoid putting on yesterday’s damp suit.

Choose one dinner-ready outfit instead of a separate formal capsule. A collared aloha shirt, neat top, or simple dress can cover a resort dinner and a luau. Check the venue’s current dress guidance before packing for a special meal or private event; the venue sets the final dress code.

An ocean-day kit is a swimsuit, rash guard or swim shirt, cover-up, secure hat, sunglasses, and beach footwear. The EPA’s sun-safety guidance recommends protective clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, shade, and sunscreen rather than asking one item to do the whole job. I pack a long-sleeve rash guard because it is the easiest clothing layer to keep on while swimming or snorkeling.

I do not pack one pair of shoes for an island. Pack for the surfaces on your itinerary. Beach access and town walking may need only secure sandals. A rocky lava path, wet trail, or long walking day calls for closed-toe shoes with useful tread and socks that will not stay damp all afternoon.

Check the specific route before the suitcase closes, then check it again near the day you plan to go. For the casual lane, choose a pair you can take off easily when a host or posted sign asks. The same pair should survive the town and dinner rows in your outfit matrix; otherwise it is probably doing too little work to earn suitcase space.

I give every high-elevation day its own clothing line in the plan: long pants, a warm midlayer, wind- or rain-resistant shell, closed-toe shoes, and a warm hat when the forecast supports it. The National Park Service says Haleakalā’s summit temperatures commonly drop below freezing.

Maunakea requires the same forecast-first thinking. The official Maunakea Visitor Information Station page says weather varies widely and sometimes very quickly, and it publishes the latest road and weather information. Check that page on the day of the visit; clothing does not solve altitude, road, or closure risk.

A pre-dawn boat is a smaller version of the same problem. Wind and spray can make a light shell more useful than another beach outfit. Put that layer in the day bag, not at the bottom of the suitcase.

I write only the rows that appear in the itinerary:

• Ocean: swimsuit, rash guard, cover-up, hat, sunglasses, and beach footwear.
• Town and driving: light everyday clothes, walking shoes or secure sandals, and a layer for indoor air conditioning.
• Trail or lava: activity-ready top and bottom, closed-toe shoes, socks, and the rain or sun layer the route needs.
• Summit or pre-dawn: long pants, midlayer, shell, closed-toe shoes, and forecast-driven warmth.
• Dinner or luau: one neat island-casual outfit plus footwear that works on the venue's actual surface.

Now look for overlap. The town shirt can become the dinner shirt. The shell can cover a trail shower and a boat deck. The long pants can serve a summit and the flight home. I remove duplicate jobs before adding more clothes.
