Every October, the same headline runs about Christmas Hawaii airfare and holiday flights in general: Google Flights says the cheapest time to book is about 51 days before you fly. It’s good data. It’s also the wrong calendar for Hawaiʻi.

That number is a national average built on short domestic trips from thousands of markets. Christmas in Hawaiʻi is a six-hour leisure flight to a fixed number of seats that mainland families, Japanese travelers, and holiday-home owners all want during the same two weeks. The seats don’t wait for late October. Last September, some of the most popular West Coast routes had already sold out of regular economy for Christmas week.

Google’s 2025 holiday travel report found that Christmas fares have been lowest about 51 days before departure, with a low-price range running 32 to 73 days out. The methodology matters: it averages round-trip fares for 4- to 16-day trips departing from the top 4,000 U.S. markets, observed from 2021 through August 2025. Most of those trips are two-hour flights to see family.

Hawaiʻi is a different animal. December is one of the heaviest arrival months of the year. DBEDT counted 868,894 visitors in December 2025, with 850,263 of them arriving by air, spending an average of $273 per person per day, up 11 percent from the prior December. Airlines know this. They don’t discount seats they can sell at full fare, and the transpacific schedule doesn’t flex the way a Dallas–Chicago route does.

The proof came early last year. On September 9, 2025, Beat of Hawaii spot-checked holiday fares and found San Francisco to Maui for December 20–27 with no economy seats left at all, three and a half months out. Seattle to Maui for December 27–January 3 was $1,123 round trip in basic economy, up to $2,023 in standard economy nonstop. Los Angeles to Kauaʻi for the same week ran about $1,000 in basic economy and up to $1,700 in standard.

Those are last year’s numbers and they’ll move. The pattern won’t. By the time the national “51 days out” window opens in late October, the Hawaiʻi holiday inventory you want is usually either gone or priced for people who waited.

The 2026–27 holiday period sets up like this. Christmas Day falls on a Friday (December 25, 2026). New Year’s Day is also a Friday (January 1, 2027). That puts both holidays at the end of a work week, which concentrates outbound travel on the weekend before each one.

December 18–20 (Friday–Sunday). The big outbound wave. Schools let out, and the Friday and Saturday departures are the most expensive outbound days of the entire winter.

December 21–23 (Monday–Wednesday). Still peak, but midweek. Google’s data puts Monday-through-Wednesday travel at roughly 13 percent cheaper than weekend flying across the board, and that gap tends to widen on holiday dates.

December 24–25 (Thursday–Friday). Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. The quietest outbound days of the window. Hopper’s holiday outlook flags both as the days to fly if you want fewer crowds, and fewer crowds generally means lower fares. You trade Christmas morning at home for Christmas dinner in Hawaiʻi. For a lot of families that’s an upgrade.

December 26–30. The second outbound wave, people who did Christmas at home and want New Year’s on the beach. The December 26 Saturday departure is another expensive one.

December 31–January 1 (Thursday–Friday). Same dynamic as Christmas. New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day flights are the soft spots.

January 2–3 (Saturday–Sunday). The return crunch. Nearly everyone who flew out December 18–26 is trying to get home this weekend. Return fares peak here.

January 4 and later. The cliff. Fares fall fast once the return wave clears, and by the second week of January you’re in the cheapest stretch of the whole Hawaiʻi travel year. Hotels follow the same curve (see the January guide).

Translate Google’s window to a December 19 departure and you get October 7 (73 days out) through November 17 (32 days out), with the statistical low around October 29. For a Christmas Eve departure, that window slides to October 12 through November 22.

For Hawaiʻi, treat those as the last-call dates, not the sweet spot. Our working calendar:

• Now through mid-September. Book if your dates are fixed and fall on the expensive days: the December 18–20 outbound, the December 26 outbound, or a January 2–3 return. Nonstop seats on those days from the West Coast are the first to go.
• Late September through early October. Still reasonable for midweek departures and the Christmas Eve / Christmas Day / New Year’s Day flights. Set a Google Flights price alert on your exact route now and buy on the first meaningful drop, not the second.
• Mid-October through mid-November. The national window. For Hawaiʻi, this is where you take what’s left. Connections through Los Angeles, San Francisco, or Seattle open up when nonstops are full, and Google’s data puts the layover discount at about 22 percent on average.
• After Thanksgiving. You’re shopping for a seat, not a fare. The one exception is the January 4-and-later return, which is still worth waiting for if your outbound is already booked.

One more date to circle. Fares climb into Thanksgiving week, then the week after Thanksgiving (November 30–December 6) drops back toward shoulder pricing before Christmas demand kicks in. If you have any flexibility at all, a trip that starts December 1 and ends December 12 costs a fraction of the same trip two weeks later.

Fly on the holiday itself. This is the single biggest lever. Out on December 24 or 25, back on December 31 or January 1. You land on Christmas afternoon with the lei on and dinner reservations already made. The fare difference against a December 19 departure can run into hundreds of dollars per seat.

Go midweek on at least one leg. If you can’t fly on the holiday, a Tuesday or Wednesday departure paired with a Tuesday return beats Saturday-to-Saturday by a wide margin. The 13 percent midweek figure is a national average; on Hawaiʻi holiday dates the spread is often bigger.

Take the connection. Nonstop West Coast flights sell out first. A one-stop through LAX, SFO, or SEA often has seats and a lower fare well after the nonstops are gone. The cost is a few hours and one more chance for a weather delay (more on that below).

Fly open-jaw. Into one island, out of another. Most carriers price LAX–OGG out and LIH–LAX home the same as a standard round trip, and it removes one interisland flight from a week when interisland fares are at their highest. The holiday window is where miles earn their keep, because cash fares are at their worst. Two things changed since last Christmas.

First, Alaska and Hawaiian now operate under a single FAA certificate, with Hawaiian kept as its own brand. Second, HawaiianMiles became Atmos Rewards, the combined loyalty program. For travelers, the practical upside is one award search across both airlines’ Hawaiʻi routes instead of two.

Award seats on peak holiday dates are scarce on every program, so the same calendar applies: search now, and be willing to burn points on a Christmas Day or New Year’s Day flight where availability is better. If you’re transferring credit card points, do it only after you’ve confirmed the seat is bookable. Transfers don’t reverse.

Hawaiʻi’s own December weather rarely cancels a flight. The risk sits at the other end of the trip: a snowstorm in Denver, an ice day in Dallas, a fog morning in San Francisco. If you’re connecting, you’re exposed.

Hopper’s data shows flights departing between 5 and 8 a.m. are about twice as likely to avoid delays as flights after 9 a.m. Take the early departure on the mainland leg, and leave a real cushion (two hours, not 45 minutes) at the connecting hub.

For a trip this size, we’d also look hard at trip insurance. The holiday week is the most expensive time of year to lose a night of prepaid lodging to a missed connection. Airfare isn’t the only holiday inventory with a cliff.

Rental cars. Island fleets are fixed, and the December 18–January 3 window empties the lots. Book the car the same week you book the flight. We use Discount Hawaii Car Rental; its FAQ says there is no cancellation fee and no vehicle prepayment on most reservations, so you can lock a rate now and rebook if prices drop. Lodging. Resort rates over the holiday period are the highest of the year, and many properties enforce minimum stays. If you’re choosing between flight-first and hotel-first, book whichever one has the worse cancellation terms last. For most travelers that means: hotel now (free cancellation), flight the moment the fare alert fires, car right after.

Run the whole trip through the Hawaiʻi cost explorer with late-December dates before you commit. The holiday multiplier on airfare is only part of the bill.

You’re not out of options. You’re out of cheap nonstops on the popular days.

Start with the holiday-day flights: December 24, 25, 31, and January 1. Then look at connections instead of nonstops. Then check the open-jaw routing, because the island you hadn’t considered may still have seats. If none of that works, the smart move is to shift the trip into the second week of January, when fares on the same routes drop sharply once the holiday return wave clears and the islands quiet down.

We’d rather see you in Hawaiʻi on January 10 with money left for the helicopter tour than on December 20 with none.

The national holiday booking window runs mid-October to mid-November. The Hawaiʻi window runs now to mid-September for the expensive days, and through early October for everything else. After that, you’re buying what’s left.
