On September 10, the Hawaiʻi Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism reported that scheduled nonstop seats for September through November 2026 are up from a year ago in the U.S. West and U.S. East, while several international markets have fewer seats.

The useful takeaway is not “wait for a cheap fare.” More seats can create more schedule choices, but statewide totals do not predict the price on one route, date, or island. Use the data to widen the right comparison, then book the itinerary that works.

Scheduled nonstop capacity from the U.S. West rose 6.5%. U.S. East capacity rose 4.4%.

International capacity moved the other way. Japan fell 12.9%, while Canada fell 12.7%. Korea dropped 21.8%, and Oceania dropped 21.3%.

Those are market totals. They do not mean every West Coast city gained a flight, every Canadian route lost one, or a 6.5% capacity increase will cut your fare by 6.5%. The U.S. West increase covers a large network. A traveler leaving Los Angeles can see a very different set of flights from someone departing a smaller mainland airport. The U.S. East figure is also a market-wide total. It measures scheduled nonstop seats, not the menu of itineraries available to any one traveler.

Start with a flexible date grid for your actual origin and destination. Compare two sensible departure days, then check the return separately. A lower outbound fare can hide an expensive return. Seat selection and baggage charges can also change a low headline price. An overnight connection can add another cost.

A statewide seat increase can still miss the island you want. HNL is Hawaiʻi's largest airport and has extensive domestic, international, and Neighbor Island service, according to its airport profile. It is not automatically the best arrival point for a Maui, Kauaʻi, or west-side Hawaiʻi Island trip.

Price the direct-to-island option against an HNL connection as two complete travel days. Check the connection time and baggage terms. Then account for the time needed to collect a rental car after arrival. A nonstop to your destination island can cost more and still be the better buy if it removes a connection and protects the first vacation day.

The reductions from Japan, Canada, Korea, and Oceania deserve a different response. They do not prove that your fare will rise. They do mean fewer scheduled nonstop seats are available across each of those markets than during the same period last year.

Check whether last year's nonstop still operates on your weekday before arranging hotels around it. Compare that nonstop with a one-stop itinerary through a U.S. gateway, but leave enough connection time and read the bag-transfer rules. The July Alaska and Hawaiian network update, for example, says Hawaiian will not resume its seasonal Honolulu-Auckland service in November.

Also check the operating carrier, not just the airline name displayed by the seller. A codeshare can change the terminal or the carrier handling a disruption. Check seat and baggage rules separately. Save the confirmation and fare rules after booking, then recheck the itinerary before travel.
