Two things drop after Labor Day. Family travel volume falls hard as schools restart. And the airlines that spent summer running peak-season capacity now have empty seats to sell.

What we’re seeing for fall 2026 round-trip fares to Honolulu, based on our own ongoing Google Flights sampling for September through early-November departures (spot-checked weekly across roughly a dozen origin cities, non-sale weekday pricing):

• West Coast (LAX, SFO, SEA, PDX): low $300s to mid-$500s
• Midwest (DEN, ORD, DFW): low $500s to low $700s
• East Coast (JFK, BOS, ATL): mid-$500s to mid-$800s

Treat those as directional bands, not guarantees. What we can say with more confidence is that the same routes were pricing noticeably higher in July. The gap is real but easy to miss because most travelers stop watching Hawaiʻi fares once summer is over. Hopper’s flight research has flagged fall, September and October in particular, as the cheapest shoulder-season window to fly to Hawaiʻi from the West Coast.

Three forces drive the drop:

School’s back in. Families make up the biggest chunk of summer transpacific demand. Once the school year restarts, that demand evaporates almost overnight. Airlines don’t shrink summer capacity that fast, so seats sit unsold.

A weather window most of the mainland ignores. Fall in Hawaiʻi tends to run dry and trade-driven, and in our experience it’s the most reliable stretch of the year for leeward-side beach weather. But “fall vacation” on the mainland still cues Napa or New England, not Kauaʻi. Low awareness equals low booking pressure.

Hurricane season overhang. Central Pacific hurricane season runs through November 30. Actual hurricane hits on the islands are historically rare. The Central Pacific basin averages roughly four to five tropical cyclones per season, according to NOAA’s Central Pacific Hurricane Center, and most weaken well before they get near land. Headline fear still keeps some travelers away, which softens fares. Buy travel insurance, watch the NHC’s seven-day outlook, and let the pricing work in your favor.

The generic “book six months ahead” advice doesn’t hold in fall. After Labor Day, demand weakens faster than airlines pull down capacity, so seats that were locked at peak prices in July start moving on discount closer to departure.

For September and early-October departures, the sweet spot is roughly 6 to 10 weeks out. Late-October and early-November trips do slightly better booked 8 to 12 weeks out. Both windows sit right around now if you’re reading this in late July. That’s not coincidence. This is the month the pattern breaks in a traveler’s favor.

General airfare patterns tracked at the Bureau of Transportation Statistics support the shape of this. Transpacific fares tend to bottom out several weeks ahead of a fall departure, then climb steadily as planes fill. Waiting for a last-minute deal almost never works in Hawaiʻi’s tight-inventory market. Waiting one week too long can cost real money per ticket on the same seat.

A few levers worth pulling in September and October:

• Tuesday and Wednesday flights run noticeably cheaper than Friday and Saturday departures. This is unchanged from summer, and still the single easiest save.
• Red-eyes from the West Coast stay meaningfully cheaper than daytime flights. The lie-flat premium cabin is often cheaper too. Worth checking if you fly premium.
• Weekday-to-weekday itineraries (Wed–Wed, Tue–Tue) consistently beat weekend-anchored trips. If you can shift your dates by one day, do it.

Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines now operate under one parent company, following the merger that closed in May 2024. Both brands are still flying, but they share a single loyalty program (Alaska Mileage Plan) and increasingly a shared schedule. Fall sale emails from Alaska are the first place to look for shoulder-season deals on either metal.

Southwest stays the family value play from the mainland thanks to two free checked bags. On a West Coast round trip for four, that’s meaningful money you don’t hand back at the counter. Their interisland service ended in late April 2024, so plan your inter-island hops on Hawaiian.

United and Delta work best from the East Coast, where their transcon nonstops still price competitively against one-stop alternatives on cheaper airlines. Delta’s Detroit–Honolulu and United’s Newark–Honolulu are two of the most useful nonstop options east of the Mississippi.

Watch for flash sales. In fall specifically, airlines drop short-window promotions to move soft inventory. Google Flights alerts on your actual dates catch these. Broad “cheap Hawaii flights” newsletters rarely surface them fast enough.

Interisland fares don’t drop the way transpacific does in fall. If anything, the reverse. Hawaiian Airlines is the dominant carrier and their schedules are tightly optimized. Southwest’s interisland exit in late April 2024 removed the one competitive pressure that had held fares in check, and the effect has stuck.

Book interisland flights several weeks out rather than waiting for a last-minute drop that isn’t coming. Hawaiian handles most jet-service routes. Mokulele Airlines covers smaller-airport hops (Kalaupapa, Hāna, Kapalua) on prop planes.

One move that saves money and hassle: fly into one island and out of another. Most major airlines price this the same as a same-airport round trip, and it eliminates one interisland flight. Set two fare alerts. Not five. Two.

One on Google Flights for your primary route (say, LAX–HNL, October 5–15). One on your backup dates (September 28–October 8). Google will email when the price drops meaningfully. That’s it. Every other tool piles onto that same underlying data.

If you have credit card points sitting idle, fall is a decent time to burn them:

• Chase Ultimate Rewards transfer 1:1 to Southwest, United, and Hawaiian (usable across the combined Alaska/Hawaiian network post-merger). A Sapphire Preferred sign-up bonus can go a long way toward a West Coast round trip on Southwest in the fall shoulder.
• American Express Membership Rewards transfer to Delta and Hawaiian. Delta award availability tightens over the holidays, but the fall shoulder is usually workable.
• Alaska Mileage Plan is the sleeper pick since the merger. Access to both Alaska- and Hawaiian-metal award inventory makes fall award trips genuinely available where they weren’t a year ago.

The fall sweet spot ends abruptly. Fares climb sharply into Thanksgiving week (the dedicated Thanksgiving-Hawaiʻi booking window guide has the specifics) and then stay elevated through New Year’s.

The critical dates in 2026: Thanksgiving is November 26, so expect the airfare pop to start roughly November 17–19. If you’re eyeing a fall trip, book to return by November 15 and you catch the tail of the shoulder rate. Return November 22 or later and you’re paying the holiday multiplier, often a significant premium on the exact same route.

One quiet win: the week AFTER Thanksgiving (November 30–December 6) drops back into shoulder pricing before Christmas demand kicks in. If your calendar has flex, that week is one of the best-priced non-January windows on the whole schedule.

Flight-plus-hotel packages can beat separate bookings in fall, but only for specific resort brands. Costco Travel routinely lands Big Island Kohala Coast and Maui Wailea packages that are worth pricing against à la carte during the September–October window. Alaska Airlines Vacations does similar work on Kauaʻi’s south shore around Poʻipū. Pleasant Holidays occasionally undercuts both on Oʻahu resort inventory. Always run the numbers both ways: bundled through the package operator, then unbundled with the flight from Google Flights and the hotel from the property’s direct site. In fall, packages tend to win when a resort is quietly discounting rooms it can’t fill and rolling that discount into a bundle rather than a public rate.

Where packages don’t tend to pay off: Waikīkī condos, most vacation rentals, and any property with a fixed nightly rate off Booking.com or Expedia. The math there almost always favors separate bookings.

A note on rental cars. Keep them outside the package. Bundled add-on car rates are consistently higher than what you’ll find booking direct, and fall is when the interisland car market softens alongside hotels (post–Labor Day rate drops apply here too). The window doesn’t come with a starting gun. It comes with a booking deadline that most travelers don’t notice because they’ve stopped watching Hawaiʻi fares by August.
