January in Hawaiʻi is a useful month to compare if your dates can fall after the holiday period. Travelers who can avoid holiday weekends have more date combinations to test.

Tori and I use “the January lull” for the stretch from mid-January into early February. Hopper’s aggregate airfare analysis identifies January and February as the cheapest months to fly to Hawaiʻi, though it is historical data, not a 2027 fare forecast. This guide covers how the 2027 calendar lines up, how to compare the trip costs that matter, what is happening on the islands in mid-January, and the wet-season trade-offs that come with the trip.

Compare dates from the second week of January through the first week of February. Martin Luther King Jr. Day falls within that window on Monday, January 18, 2027. Washington’s Birthday, often called Presidents Day, falls later on February 15, 2027 and marks the next federal holiday period after the window.

If your dates are flexible, search Tuesday-through-Thursday departures alongside weekend options and compare the full trip total. We wrote about the early-December quiet window on the other side of the holidays. The January window begins after New Year’s and overlaps peak whale season.

Airfare is the strongest part of the January case. Hopper’s Hawaiʻi fare analysis identifies the January–February period as a low point in its aggregate U.S.-to-Hawaiʻi airfare data once holiday dates clear. Your actual fare will depend most on your departure airport and travel dates. Use the analysis as a pattern to test, not a price promise for 2027.

Rooms are the variable. Compare hotel and vacation-rental totals across several date combinations before you decide which option is cheaper. Hotel shoppers should check resort and parking fees. If a rental car is in the plan, price it early through Discount Hawaii Car Rental and read the supplier’s payment and cancellation terms before booking.

Hopper’s historical analysis found average airfare prices dipping between 50 and 25 days before departure and advised booking at least 25 days ahead. Treat that as old aggregate guidance, not a rule for a 2027 route. Track the flight you want and book when the fare fits your budget rather than waiting for a last-minute drop.

The clearest reason to aim for January instead of early December is the whale season. NOAA’s Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary describes humpbacks in Hawaiian waters from about November through April, with January through March as peak season. You may spot surface activity from shore, including breaches, but sightings and behavior change by day.

Hawaiʻi’s winter surf season runs from November through April. North- and west-facing shores can receive extremely high surf during this period. Waimea Bay and Banzai Pipeline can be worth a stop when the ocean is working. See our North Shore winter surf guide before driving up.

Holiday-week demand can differ from mid-January, so compare your exact lodging and rental-car dates. Do not count on an easy drive or open parking near the breaks. If a contest matters to your trip, check the World Surf League calendar close to your travel dates.

One change for 2027: the published PGA TOUR schedule does not include PGA TOUR events in Hawaiʻi. The Sony Championship Hawaii is on PGA TOUR Champions during the week of January 11 through 16, 2027, at Waialae Country Club in Honolulu. Competition rounds run January 14 through 16. January falls in Hawaiʻi’s wetter winter season, roughly October through April, when clouds and rainstorms are more frequent. The National Weather Service Honolulu climate summary also notes that winter storms can bring rain to leeward areas that are often drier than windward slopes. No coast is rain-proof. Expect passing showers, and leave room for stormy stretches that can rearrange a day’s plans.

Plan around the weather instead of trying to beat it. A leeward lodging base can be a useful starting point, but check the forecast for the whole island before committing to a beach day or long drive. Keep one flexible indoor day in the itinerary. Rain can change waterfall flow and trail conditions. Check current access and hazard information before visiting Rainbow Falls or making Road to Hāna stops. Two more winter cautions. High surf frequently affects north- and west-facing shores in winter. Many beaches are for watching rather than swimming when warnings are posted, so check the current high-surf information, obey lifeguard flags, and never treat a seasonal rule as a same-day forecast. Days are shorter, too. In Honolulu, sunset is roughly 6:09 to 6:15 p.m. in mid-January, according to Timeanddate, so put your outdoor priorities in the morning.

MLK weekend falls from January 16 through 18, 2027. If those are your fixed travel dates, compare lodging early against the midweek dates around them rather than assuming the same inventory will remain.

Compare midweek dates outside MLK weekend, then check the combined flight-and-lodging total and the surf forecast for the island you want.
