Between those crowds sits roughly December 1 through 17. It is a planning window, not a fare guarantee. Your departure city, island, room type, and booking date still move the numbers.

Tori and I have watched this gap catch people off guard for years. December has a peak-month reputation, and the monthly totals support it. Those totals cannot tell you what a specific Tuesday flight or Tuesday night hotel room will cost. The calendar creates the gap. Thanksgiving travel has cleared, while the Christmas and New Year’s wave has not yet arrived. Travel guides identify the stretch after Thanksgiving and before mid-December as low season, even though December as a whole draws heavy visitor volume.

December remains a heavy arrival month statewide. DBEDT counted 868,894 visitor arrivals in December 2025, and the state’s monthly visitor statistics regularly place December near the top of the calendar. The useful distinction is timing. A monthly total is a wide-angle photograph; booking a December trip needs a close-up view of the dates.

Flight calendars tend to show the seam clearly. Google Flights searches commonly show Hawaii fares rising around December 18 and staying elevated into the first days of January. Humpbacks visit Hawaiʻi from November through May, with peak viewing from January through March, according to the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary. Shorter days. In Honolulu, December sunrise is around 7 a.m. and sunset is just before 6 p.m. Start major outdoor days early. Sunrise hikes are easier on the alarm clock, but you still need enough light for a safe descent.

North Shore water needs a different plan. Winter north swells can make north-facing beaches dangerous for casual swimmers. Fly out in the first ten days of December and return by the 17th. Those dates avoid the late-December holiday period, which can push fares higher in either direction. Price each leg before you lock it in.

Use the second week for an early-season whale trip. December can produce sightings, while January through March remains the stronger period for travelers whose main goal is whale watching.
