Kauaʻi's holiday season has a small-town anchor, not a stadium spectacle. The Lights on Rice Parade is confirmed for the first Friday of December in Līhuʻe. The Kauai Festival of Lights has historically opened at the Historic County Building where the parade finishes, but its 2026 calendar has not yet confirmed that pairing.

The parade and festival are free to attend. The parade date is set for December 4, 2026. Put the parade on an early-December calendar, then check the festival's posted schedule before building the full evening around both events.

The Lights on Rice Parade, presented by the Rotary Club of Kauaʻi, starts at 6:30 p.m. Rice Street closes to traffic at 5:30 p.m. and is expected to reopen around 9 p.m., according to the parade organizer. Organizers describe roughly 60 parade units and about 3,000 participants: floats, marching groups, and vehicles wrapped in lights.

The posted parade route starts at Vidinha Stadium on Hoolako Street, turns onto Rice Street, and ends on Eiwa Street at the Historic County Building. Watch for the county's 2026 traffic advisory closer to the date for final closure and parking details.

Past Festival of Lights opening nights have included the Kauai Chorale and a lighting countdown led by Santa, per the festival's official site and its past schedules. If the festival confirms a December 4 opening, the parade route puts both traditions within walking distance.

The Festival of Lights is not a warehouse light show. It grew out of one woman's living room. For 18 years, local artist Auntie Josie Chansky turned her Kapaʻa home into a holiday wonderland. The festival's history traces how her decorations found a new home in Līhuʻe after she could no longer host them.

She built ornaments and displays from what most people throw away: toothpicks, styrofoam cups, bottle caps, egg cartons, and flash cubes. Islanders called it "trash to treasure". Her creations eventually moved to the Historic County Building on Rice Street, where the community keeps the tradition alive.

The exhibit fills rooms of a historic building completed in 1913 with handmade Kauaʻi holiday folk art, while lights fill the park outside. Admission is free.

In past seasons, the exhibit has been open Friday through Sunday evenings from 6 to 8 p.m. through Christmas Eve, according to the festival's past schedule. Do not treat those hours as a 2026 promise. Confirm the current seasonal schedule before making the trip.

The Historic County Building sits on Rice Street in central Līhuʻe, a few minutes from the airport and Kalapaki Bay. On parade night, Rice Street closes at 5:30 p.m. Arrive early enough to park outside the closure area and walk in. The county's 2026 advisory will have the final word on parking restrictions and access.

On another December evening, the visit is simpler. Drive into Līhuʻe after dinner, find legal parking near the county building, and walk the displays after confirming current hours.

For visitors staying in Poʻipū, Kapaʻa, or Princeville, a car makes for a cleaner exit after the parade. Check transportation options for the travel date before deciding to go without one, and do not build a tight departure plan around a last-minute pickup inside the street closure.
