The question I get more than any other: “Should I do one island or two?” Or three. Or, God help us, all four in ten days. And the answer I give more than any other is: “Fewer than you think.”

Here is the honest math. Each additional island on your itinerary costs you roughly half a day of real vacation time — check out of your first hotel, drive to the airport, fly, land, wait for luggage, pick up a new rental car, drive to the next hotel, unpack. That’s not travel, that’s logistics. And the extra interisland flight, the extra rental car, and the extra set of hotel nights all add up fast. For a lot of first-time visitors, one island done well beats three done in a blur.

That said, if you’re coming from the East Coast and flying 10+ hours to get here, I understand the temptation to see more than one place. This guide lays out the logistics so you can make the call with real numbers instead of guesswork — and then gives you three sample itineraries at 7, 10, and 14 days.

When people price out a multi-island trip, they usually budget for the interisland flight and stop there. That’s the smallest piece. The full stack of hidden costs looks like this:

Interisland airfare. Hawaiian Airlines and Southwest fly the interisland routes between Honolulu, Kahului (Maui), Kona and Hilo (Big Island), and Lihue (Kauai). One-way fares typically run $70–$160 per person depending on route, day, and how far ahead you book. Round-trip a family of four between Oahu and Maui and you’re at $560–$1,280 before you’ve even factored in bags.

A second rental car. You cannot take your rental across islands. Every time you change islands, you return the car on one end and pick up a fresh one on the other. Each new rental has its own base rate, taxes, airport concession fees, and (often) an underage or additional-driver surcharge. Budget $70–$130 per day per island, and remember you’re paying for a minimum one-day rental even if your flight lands at 2 p.m. and you drive straight to the hotel.

Baggage fees stack up — and yes, this is new for Southwest. Hawaiian Airlines has long charged for checked bags on interisland routes unless you’re a Hawaiian Miles elite, a Barclays Hawaiian credit cardholder, or (in some cases) a Hawaiʻi resident using the local fare. Southwest used to be the “bags fly free” outlier, but that’s over as of 2025: travelers on Southwest’s Basic, Choice, and Choice Preferred fares now pay for checked bags ($35 first / $45 second as of this writing, and increasing again in April 2026). Free checked bags on Southwest now require either a Choice Extra fare, A-List Preferred status (two free bags), or A-List status / a Southwest Rapid Rewards credit card (first bag free). Two checked bags each direction, multiplied by the number of people and island changes, can easily add $200–$500 to a trip for a family. Double-check your fare type before assuming the bag is included.

The half-day rule. I lose roughly half a day of vacation every time I change islands. Check out by 11, drive to the airport, return the car, 90 minutes in the airport before the flight, 45-minute flight, baggage claim, new rental counter, drive to the next hotel, check in. Even a smooth day eats 4–6 hours. On a short trip, that’s a real chunk of your time.

Lost “local knowledge” time. The first day on any new island is spent figuring out where the grocery store is, where the beach parking fills up early, which road to avoid at rush hour. On a one-island trip, by day three you know the rhythm. On a three-island trip, you never do.

My honest rule of thumb: budget three nights minimum per island, preferably four. Anything less and you’re changing hotels faster than you’re seeing anything.

For the major-airport interisland routes most visitors fly, there are two carriers that matter: Hawaiian Airlines and Southwest Airlines. Hawaiian has the historic market share and flies the most frequent schedule. Southwest entered the interisland market in 2019 and competes hard on price. Their presence dragged fares down across the board, which is a win for travelers.

One more carrier worth knowing about: Mokulele Airlines still runs scheduled Cessna Grand Caravan service to several smaller airports that Hawaiian and Southwest don’t touch — Kapalua (JHM), Hāna (HNM), Waimea-Kohala (MUE), and the two Molokaʻi airports (Hoʻolehua and Kalaupapa), plus Lānaʻi. If your itinerary includes any of those as endpoints — say, flying into Kapalua instead of Kahului to save the west-side drive, or day-tripping to Molokaʻi — Mokulele is the answer. For the standard HNL / OGG / KOA / ITO / LIH routing that most visitors use, you won’t need them.

Routes that exist. Almost all interisland flights go through Honolulu (HNL) — that’s the hub. The most common direct routes: HNL ↔ OGG (Kahului/Maui), HNL ↔ KOA (Kona/Big Island), HNL ↔ ITO (Hilo/Big Island), HNL ↔ LIH (Lihue/Kauai). Direct Maui–Kauai or Maui–Big Island flights exist but are limited and often go through Honolulu anyway.

Flight time. Every interisland flight is 40–55 minutes gate to gate. The whole experience — check in, security, board, fly, land, baggage — is 3–4 hours door to door.

Book ahead for summer. Interisland fares are dynamic. The same Oahu–Maui hop that costs $79 two months out can be $189 two weeks out, especially on Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings during the summer peak. Aim to book interisland legs at the same time as your mainland flights.

Flight times matter. On a tight itinerary, do not take the 6 a.m. flight (too early, you’re exhausted) or the 6 p.m. flight (too late, you lose the afternoon). The 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. window is the sweet spot — you finish your morning on the outgoing island, fly, and arrive with enough afternoon left to do something.

Plan to rent a separate car on every island you visit. The one exception is Oahu, where Waikīkī-based travelers sometimes skip the rental entirely and use The Bus, rideshare, and day tours. Every other island — Maui, Big Island, Kauai — needs a car. There’s no meaningful public transit for tourists, and rideshare coverage outside the main resort areas is thin.

A few practical tips that save real money:

Book every rental at once. Don’t wait to reserve the next island’s car until you land. Rental rates in Hawaiʻi move with availability, and same-day walk-up rates are the worst. Reserve all your cars the day you book your flights.

Check airport versus off-airport pickup. Airport concession fees add 10–12% to your daily rate. On Maui and Big Island, off-airport agencies exist and can be cheaper, but the shuttle hassle rarely justifies the savings unless you’re renting for a full week.

Return the car before your flight, not the night before. Some people drop the car the night before an early interisland flight “to be safe.” That just costs you a taxi to the airport and a day you could have been using the car. Drop it the morning of the flight.

Seven days is the realistic minimum for two islands. Anything shorter and you’re essentially doing a one-island trip with a very expensive day trip tacked on. The two-island pairings that work best for a week are Oahu + Maui, Oahu + Kauai, or Maui + Big Island.

Oahu + Maui, 7 days:

Days 1–3: Oahu. Arrive HNL, stay in Waikīkī or Ko Olina. Day one: beach + dinner at your hotel to recover from the flight. Day two: Pearl Harbor in the morning, Waikīkī beach afternoon. Day three: North Shore day — Hale’iwa, Waimea Bay, Turtle Bay area.

Day 4: Travel day. Late morning flight from HNL to OGG. Pick up car, drive to Wailea or Kāʻanapali, check in, beach afternoon.

Days 5–7: Maui. Day five: Road to Hana (or a Haleakalā summit morning if you’d rather skip the Hana drive). Day six: Molokini snorkel trip in the morning, West Maui beaches in the afternoon. Day seven: flexible — another beach day, Ia’o Valley, or Upcountry Maui — then fly home the following morning.

This gives you three real days on each island and uses the interisland flight as a half-day transition. Skip this structure if you really want to “do” both islands properly — seven days is tight.

Ten days is where a three-island trip starts to make sense. The formula: three full days on each island, with travel days slotted in between.

Oahu + Maui + Big Island, 10 days:

Days 1–3: Oahu. Waikīkī or Ko Olina base. Pearl Harbor, North Shore, Diamond Head, a day at the beach. Three nights.

Day 4: Fly HNL → OGG. Mid-morning flight. Arrive Maui around noon, head to Wailea or Kāʻanapali, pool and dinner.

Days 5–6: Maui. Road to Hana on one day (full-day commitment), Haleakalā + Upcountry on the other. Consider a Molokini snorkel trip if you prefer water to road time.

Day 7: Fly OGG → KOA. Mid-morning flight to Kona. Drop luggage at a Kona or Waikoloa hotel, beach afternoon.

Days 8–9: Big Island. Day one: Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park — full day, it’s a 2.5-hour drive each way from Kona. Day two: Kona snorkeling + coffee country + Pu’uhonua o Hōnaunau (Place of Refuge). Fly home morning of day 10.

This itinerary works best booked as an open-jaw (fly into HNL, out of KOA) so you don’t backtrack through Honolulu on your last day. Most mainland carriers will let you do this without a fare penalty.

Two weeks is the “see it all” trip. You can realistically cover three islands at four full days each, or stretch it to all four islands if you’re willing to accept three-night stays.

Option A — three islands, 4 nights each: Oahu (4) → Maui (4) → Kauai (4), with two travel days split in. This is the most relaxed three-island structure and my recommended shape for travelers who want one big Hawaiʻi trip to hit the highlights without feeling rushed.

Option B — all four islands, 3 nights each: Oahu (3) → Maui (3) → Big Island (3) → Kauai (3), with three travel days. This is doable but punishing. You’re living out of a suitcase, you’ll have three airport days in two weeks, and you’ll likely want a vacation from your vacation. Only recommended if you’re a first-time visitor who genuinely wants a taste of each island and is willing to trade depth for breadth.

In either structure, book an open-jaw flight to minimize backtracking. If you’re doing Oahu → Maui → Kauai, fly into HNL and out of LIH. The interisland routing is straightforward and every carrier handles it.

Planning the first day as a full activity day. You just flew 5–10 hours. The first day of any Hawaiʻi trip should be a pool/beach/dinner day, not the Road to Hana. Give yourself a buffer.

Scheduling a big activity on a travel day. “We fly at 11, so we’ll do a sunrise Haleakalā trip before we go.” No, you won’t. Travel days should be travel days. Pack, check out, fly, land, relax.

Counting the arrival and departure days as full days. If you land at 3 p.m. and fly out at 10 a.m., those are not vacation days. They’re buffer days. Do the math with full days when you’re deciding how many islands you can handle.

Choosing islands that don’t actually complement each other. Oahu + Maui gives you city + resort. Kauai + Big Island gives you rugged nature on both ends. Trying to pair islands for variety rather than “most famous” often produces a more satisfying trip.

Underestimating drive times on a new island. Hilo to Kona on Big Island is 2.5 hours. Kāʻanapali to the start of Hana is 90 minutes before you even begin the drive. Always look at the map before committing to an “easy afternoon side trip.”

A lot of first-time visitors come in planning three islands and leave saying, “We should have just picked one.” Here’s when single-island is the right call:

You have 7 days or fewer. Stay on one island.

You’re traveling with kids under 6. Hauling toddlers through airports every three days is not a vacation. Pick one island with a good beach and settle in.

You want to actually relax. Multi-island trips are active vacations. Single-island trips can be active or lazy. If you want to read three books on a lounge chair, one island is correct.

You’ve been to Hawaiʻi before. Return visitors almost always pick one island and go deeper — a region they haven’t explored, a specific activity they want to do well, a slower pace. They’ve already “seen” Hawaiʻi.
