That gives Big Island travelers a bookable option. On the other islands, shortlist two nearby restaurants, but wait for a page that actually says 2026 before paying.

Plan for beach weather and pack a light rain layer. November conditions can turn quickly, especially between an island's dry side and windward side. PIKO at Outrigger Kona Resort & Spa has published a Thanksgiving page listing a grand buffet on Thursday, November 26, 2026, from noon to 8 p.m. Adults are $92, children ages 6–12 are $49, and children 5 and younger are free. The restaurant says the buffet is open to the public, event parking is complimentary, and reservations are required.

The posted menu is broad enough to settle the traditional-versus-island-style argument in one sitting: carved turkey with lilikoi cranberry sauce, prime rib, snow crab legs, island fish, braised lamb shanks, local fruit, and desserts. PIKO is in Keauhou, south of Kailua-Kona. I would book it for a Kona-side stay; I would not cross the island from Hilo for a buffet, especially for an evening seating.

When reserving with PIKO, confirm the selected date and party size before paying, and review any taxes, service charge, deposit, or cancellation terms that appear during checkout.

Holiday pages can remain indexed after the meal they described has passed. A page titled “Thanksgiving” is not current enough on its own. Before you treat any restaurant as a 2026 option, look for all four signals on the restaurant or resort's own site:

• Thursday, November 26, 2026 appears on the event or booking page.
• The venue, meal period, and hours match the reservation slot.
• The current price or menu is attached to that 2026 date.
• The reservation path is active and shows the cancellation or deposit terms before payment.

If one of those pieces is missing, call the restaurant or ask your resort concierge for the release date. Keep a second option close to your lodging. A confirmed casual meal ten minutes away is a better holiday plan than an unverified resort buffet across the island.

Many commercial luau reservations pair dinner with a show, though schedules and inclusions vary by venue. I treat a commercial luau as a visitor experience, not a substitute for learning about Native Hawaiian cultural practice.

Thanksgiving availability is date-specific. Confirm the operating night before you build your plans around it, then book well ahead if that is your dinner. A no-reservation meal can work well, but do not assume your chosen food stop will be open on Thanksgiving Day. Confirm holiday hours and preorder deadlines with the grocery store, deli, or plate-lunch stop you want to use. If you need a dependable casual plan, buy your food the day before.

Some of my favorite Hawaii holiday meals have been improvised: poke and a few sides from a grocery counter, eaten at a beach park table while everyone back home is settling into a long afternoon indoors.

Foodland is locally owned and operated in Hawaii. Its history starts in Hawaii in 1948. Foodland offered pre-order Thanksgiving dinners in 2025; check current 2026 options and cutoff dates before relying on one for dinner. If your rental has a kitchen, make a farmers market run earlier in the week and cook what looks good. If you spot locally grown citrus at a market, grab a few.

The best part of an island Thanksgiving is the morning. Dinner is later, and mainland time may have you awake before sunrise. Swim early, or walk a beach before parking fills. A short trail also works before the day gets warm.

Humpbacks may be in Hawaiian waters by then. The Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary says humpback whales are generally seen in Hawaii from November through April, with peak season from January through March. September: Lock flights and lodging if your dates are firm. Big Island travelers who want the PIKO buffet should reserve once flights and lodging are set, subject to availability. On the other islands, choose two restaurants near the hotel and ask when 2026 holiday booking opens. If your first dinner choice still has no current page by late October, move to the backup rather than waiting on a promise.

Two to four weeks out: Check what's happening that week. Make a grocery or farmers market plan. Leave a full day open. A holiday should not feel like an airport connection.
